A man of 36 is believed to have become the first person in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning.
Lee Maisey smoked six cannabis cigarettes a day for 11 years, an inquest heard. His death, which was registered as having been caused by cannabis toxicity, led to new warnings about the drug, which is due to be reclassified this month as a less dangerous one.
"This type of death is extremely rare," Prof John Henry, a toxicologist at Imperial College, London, said after the inquest at Haverfordwest, west Wales.
"I have not seen anything like this before. It corrects the argument that cannabis cannot kill anybody."
The inquest heard that Mr Maisey had complained of a headache on Aug 22 last year. Next morning he was found dead at the house he shared with a friend, Jeffrey Saunders, in Summerhill, Pembrokeshire.
Michael Howells, the Pembrokeshire coroner, said Mr Maisey was free from disease and had not drunk alcohol for at least 48 hours. Post-mortem tests showed a high level of cannabinoids in his blood.
He recorded a verdict of death by misadventure because Mr Maisey had died while taking part in an illegal activity. The death led to a warning about the changing strength of cannabis, which is to be reduced to a Class C drug on Jan 29.
Dr Philip Guy, a lecturer in addictions at the University of Hull, said: "Cannabis is not the nice hippy drug it used to be. It has been experimented with to produce stronger varieties."
Dr Guy said that death was more likely if users ate the drug rather than smoked it. "I would not be surprised if in this case the deceased had ingested a fatal amount of cannabis."
Last autumn police issued a warning that big consignments of strong cannabis were being smuggled in from Africa. On Jan 29, cannabis will be reclassified from a class B to a class C drug.
The shadow home secretary, David Davis, said last night: "This highlights what we have been saying about the effects of cannabis all along. When will people wake up to the fact that cannabis can be a harmful drug?
"By reclassifying the drug David Blunkett has shown he has lost the war on drugs. In my eyes, it's nothing more than an admission of failure."
Tristan Millington-Drake, the chief executive of the Chemical Dependency Centre, a charity that provides treatment for people with drug problems, said: "We have always taken the view that cannabis is an addictive drug, unlike the pedlars who try to persuade us that it is harmless. The Government's decision to reclassify cannabis is a mistake."

I understand what you are refering to Tiffs, but I don't think that smoking cannabis for 11 years could be classed as a teenage curiosity smoke or even a fad. This guy was a serious cannabis user, eleven years is a long time. And comparing this guy to young people/teenagers going through normal fazes in their adolescence is really not rational because of the quantity he smoked and the periods of smoking these quantities.

this still sounds like some wierd weed witch hunt. Because smoking dope is illegal in most places, there is a man dead by "misadventure". what if he had died of lung cancer from ciggarettes? perfectly legal, even more deadly, and more commonly used. did he smoke ciggy's shy? did the clip say? Perhaps he lived near some large processing plant, got salmonella poisoning? anything? did the inquest seems to be fairly conducted, or was marijuanna the villian right off the bat? just curious about what other variables may have been involved....

Bloodsfire makes several relevant points. I guess the question is really..... are "they" growing weed that strong nowadays? I have yet to hear of any deaths in Amsterdam involving cannabis ingestion, and they have potent hashish!

I am sure we all have experience and opinions about Mary Jane, but doubt any of us regard it as a lethal agent, or a poisonous substance.

I'm going to have to say that I find this irrelevant. 1. Because I am a smoker and 2. Because I have experienced the effects of cannabis.

You seem to find it easier to believe that cigarettes could have killed this man over drug taking Bloodsfire? I do not know how much experience you have had with either, but let me assure you that I have had extensive experience with both. I have been smoker more than half my life (16 years) and have had to deal with a close family member that has had an addiction to cannabis for about 5 years. While cigarette packets constantly warn us about the effects of using their contents, I really don't think that this is reliable information. With that said, I do actually believe that smoking does cause a large number of illness including premature death. I don't think there has been enough research into cigarette smoking to make anyone think that this is across the board. Everything in life effects different people differently.

Where I am actually going with this is, cigarettes, while legal and (apparently lethal) have never made me vomit uncontrollably, swear uncontrollably, insult people, assault people either verbally or physically or otherwise behave differently than I would normally be expected to behave, whereas cannabis (and other drugs) do.

I have seen my family member so hopped on drugs that he has taken a knife to his own child's throat.

From where I stand, its far easier to believe that the drugs killed him rather than any other factor in his life and basically serve him right.

But while saying that let me also say when I die from lung cancer I will blaming no one but myself. We all make our own beds...

Hmm...... was it the reefer that killed him or the 14 MARS BAR a day habit that went with it

On a more serious note though, it is interesting that Cannabis was widely used by medical practioners in the USA (and other countries) up until the 1940's until the US GOVT made it prohibited. The American Medical Asociation Lobbied to block the ban and failed.

Most Western Govt's quickly followed suit in the ban.

Talk about pick your poison, withdrawal symptoms from alcohol can kill you. Cannabis withdrawal won't. Now you can by alcohol ANYWHERE.

Ya, you can easily obtain alcohol, or brew it in your basement. Good weed takes more effort. I really don't understand why governments don't deal herb, collect the tax, as i think marijuana to be much mellower than liquid barbituate, called "alcoholic beverage."
I have yet to see a person under the influence of marijuana do anything ridiculously stupid. Persons under the influence of alcohol, crack, heroin, cocaine, pills, tend to do the STUPEDEST SHIT we can imagine. I am not a drug user, nor a fan of dealers, I used to track and blow aeroplanes bringing the stuffs into my country. I think the "high" I got doing this was better than toking reefer, but I took greater pleasure destroying cocaine shipments. I don't feel, personally, that marijuana is any more a threat to us all, than Cholesteral. Illegal drug trade will always be around, there is simply no way to stop it. I hate cocaine, I hate pills. I hate junkies, crack whores and the evil they produce. But if I hear about some guy growing a field of weed in my area, I will just keep my big fucking mouth SHUT, and hope I am invited to the harvest party.

I hope this does not turn anyones thoughts of me bad, or lead you to think I'm just some pot-smoking, drug taking, loser teenager whose just like the rest of them, but my thoughts on drugs and their effects on my body are neutral.
I toke, smoke ciggys and dabbble in drugs and have yet to do anything stupid or endangering to my life or someone else's ( and please dont start on the "but taking drugs is bad, exstacy puts holes in your brain, speed fucks up your nervous system).
I have never done anything to endanger my life or anyones else's and I do not see why people are so uppity about taking drugs (providing its in moderation, ONLY in moderation)
To me, they're available, its some fucking fun, why not.
But then again I know the risks of using every substance I favour, I know what could happen, why it could happen and that I shouldnt be doing it....but I know the only reason Im taking that point of speed, or poppin that ekky (the only rec drugs I use too btw) is for a 3-5 hour buzz so I can dance all night, without becoming unruly coz im drunk, (hehehe) and because I know that this will be my binge for the entire month and I know I aint gonna get my drink spiked, or wind up fuckin some dude I glanced sideways at who got me even more drunk lol.
Drugs do evil shit to your body, I do not deny it. But dam it feels great for the few hours the substance is kicking round in your bod. And I know there are other ways to relax, have fun etc, but I no I wont get out of hand, I no I can control myself and I no in the morning when Im coming down that my drug craving is over for at least a month.
I diss using drugs everyday, I diss smoking pot everyday coz thats just way too full on. But if you're only using drugs once in a while, I dont see the problem. It all comes down to self control tho, I guess....some people have it, some poeple dont.
I know I have it.

I never make my bed......................

quote:
I have seen my family member so hopped on drugs that he has taken a knife to his own child's throat.

Doing drugs around kids under 18 y/o I also diss. Until you are that age you shouldn't be subjected to shit like that for that reason.

But I still stand by my own personal belief that the drugs I take don't fully get me "hopped" to the point where I cant control myself, Ive never been that whacked, so therefore are not endangering in any way shape or form.
I no most of you will disagree with that and put it down to my childish ignorance of not wanting to accept the harsh realities of life, or some shit like that...but I am accepting the harsh realities of life being that drugs can kill, yes, smoking can cause premature death, and cancer, yes, exessive boozing will really fuck you up as well...but I can control myself and I understand the risks Im taking when I play with the shit I take, and while I can do this, my opinion of drugs on MY BODY will be a neutral one.

Heaven bent to take my hand, and lead me through the fire.
Be the long awaited answer, to a long and painful fight.

True enough, there are many tobacco smokers who do not smoke weed. Vice verse. I was just wondering if in the original article, were there traces of any other substances in the mans system? It sounds like quite a forensic mystery.
