A man of 36 is believed to have become the first person in Britain to die directly from cannabis poisoning.
Lee Maisey smoked six cannabis cigarettes a day for 11 years, an inquest heard. His death, which was registered as having been caused by cannabis toxicity, led to new warnings about the drug, which is due to be reclassified this month as a less dangerous one.
"This type of death is extremely rare," Prof John Henry, a toxicologist at Imperial College, London, said after the inquest at Haverfordwest, west Wales.
"I have not seen anything like this before. It corrects the argument that cannabis cannot kill anybody."
The inquest heard that Mr Maisey had complained of a headache on Aug 22 last year. Next morning he was found dead at the house he shared with a friend, Jeffrey Saunders, in Summerhill, Pembrokeshire.
Michael Howells, the Pembrokeshire coroner, said Mr Maisey was free from disease and had not drunk alcohol for at least 48 hours. Post-mortem tests showed a high level of cannabinoids in his blood.
He recorded a verdict of death by misadventure because Mr Maisey had died while taking part in an illegal activity. The death led to a warning about the changing strength of cannabis, which is to be reduced to a Class C drug on Jan 29.
Dr Philip Guy, a lecturer in addictions at the University of Hull, said: "Cannabis is not the nice hippy drug it used to be. It has been experimented with to produce stronger varieties."
Dr Guy said that death was more likely if users ate the drug rather than smoked it. "I would not be surprised if in this case the deceased had ingested a fatal amount of cannabis."
Last autumn police issued a warning that big consignments of strong cannabis were being smuggled in from Africa. On Jan 29, cannabis will be reclassified from a class B to a class C drug.
The shadow home secretary, David Davis, said last night: "This highlights what we have been saying about the effects of cannabis all along. When will people wake up to the fact that cannabis can be a harmful drug?
"By reclassifying the drug David Blunkett has shown he has lost the war on drugs. In my eyes, it's nothing more than an admission of failure."
Tristan Millington-Drake, the chief executive of the Chemical Dependency Centre, a charity that provides treatment for people with drug problems, said: "We have always taken the view that cannabis is an addictive drug, unlike the pedlars who try to persuade us that it is harmless. The Government's decision to reclassify cannabis is a mistake."

there are very, VERY few things that you can take ingest, inhale or inject into your body 6 times a day for 11 years that WON'T kill you

i've done some terribly stupid and disgraceful things when i drank regularly in college. i'm 'off the wagon' now and i'm hoping to keep it that way for a while

i smoke a little weed once in a while, mostly to kill time, intensify a mood or sensation, or just to modify my limitations of thinking while i'm talking to someone very close to me. i have'nt done a stupid thing yet when i'm stoned

my experiences have taught me that weed brings out the best in a person. unless the person is intrinsically a bad person

as far as 'doing stupid things' goes, i think you should look more at the persona and less at the drug. as far as 'can too much weed kill you' goes, i think the first line of my reply is applicable. i'm a BIG fan of excesses, extremes of all sorts and in all directions, but at the end of the day, i'm always going to admit that too much of most things can call you

Sampled indeed. Very carefully.
It SHOULD be legel. More people die from smokeing ciggerettes or achohol every year than people who smoke mary jane/cannabis. >_>

Your hubby sounds like a good guy, and to be sure, if you really could O.D. on cannabis alone, I know many who should be dead as doornails right now!
Happy smoking....

I'm so sorry to hear about your boyfriend passing that way and how you choose to honor him, well I hope someone does the same for me at my grave(you just never know, I'd hate to run out "after") It's nice to hear somebody understand how it can be, luckily my husband feels the same and never lets me run out. He doesn't relish the idea of living with mega superbitch.

I agree on several levels....
My now dead boyfriend was a bi-polar mess and an absolute ass hole if he had no weed to smoke. His nickname was Dopey for chrissakes! But the real Mr. Hyde surfaced if he ever ran out of ciggarettes. I told him many times I'd rather he smoke till he died of lung cancer than ever give up his ciggy's and mary-jane. Without them both, he was a total terror.
BTW: He died of intentional overdose on Vallium and opiate based prescription pills. In the Intensive Care Unit, as he lay in a coma for 11 days, I watched the hospital staff snake a tube into his lungs and pump out a black, charcoal like goop in order to help free his respiration. I remembered my lung-cancer comment then, felt terrible, and was glad he couldn't see what they were doing to him....Rest In Pieces....

*I still leave Camel Turkish Gold 100's and a joint at his grave every so often. Heaven forbid he ran out of smoke in the netherworld...

If anything should be illegal, it should be alcohol!!!! Anybody think about the medicinal uses for marijuana? For me it's like my own private Prozac. If I didn't smoke I probably would be a serial killer, the rage was that intense. I don't drink but if I feel like a nice toke after a long days work, why can't I? I pay my taxes and I don't take handouts from ANYONE. You would never suspect I smoke, I keep it quiet because the majority of society doesn't understand. I hope I don't step on anyone's feet but as a herbal partaker, I'm just tired of being misunderstood. As this is only my second post, I'm prepared to be squashed like a bug as a newbie who can't keep her mouth shut.

I think it possible that any substance could act as a cumulative poison, is naught drowning death an excess of .....water? Ya that sounds like good weed, but the amount of ingestion over such a long time period.......WOW! Perhaps the pesticides in tomatoe juice could kill you over such a period.............

Where there is a will, there is a way.
My only point is that without more info on the case in question, I just can't subscribe to the idea that marijuana can be the cause of a death by overdose. Not all by itself anyway...
And if so, I want to try that weed...

Let's have a party, and toke the BODY!! Does that classify as forensic evidence??? Certainly adds new definition to "cremation................."

True enough, there are many tobacco smokers who do not smoke weed. Vice verse. I was just wondering if in the original article, were there traces of any other substances in the mans system? It sounds like quite a forensic mystery.

I hope this does not turn anyones thoughts of me bad, or lead you to think I'm just some pot-smoking, drug taking, loser teenager whose just like the rest of them, but my thoughts on drugs and their effects on my body are neutral.
I toke, smoke ciggys and dabbble in drugs and have yet to do anything stupid or endangering to my life or someone else's ( and please dont start on the "but taking drugs is bad, exstacy puts holes in your brain, speed fucks up your nervous system).
I have never done anything to endanger my life or anyones else's and I do not see why people are so uppity about taking drugs (providing its in moderation, ONLY in moderation)
To me, they're available, its some fucking fun, why not.
But then again I know the risks of using every substance I favour, I know what could happen, why it could happen and that I shouldnt be doing it....but I know the only reason Im taking that point of speed, or poppin that ekky (the only rec drugs I use too btw) is for a 3-5 hour buzz so I can dance all night, without becoming unruly coz im drunk, (hehehe) and because I know that this will be my binge for the entire month and I know I aint gonna get my drink spiked, or wind up fuckin some dude I glanced sideways at who got me even more drunk lol.
Drugs do evil shit to your body, I do not deny it. But dam it feels great for the few hours the substance is kicking round in your bod. And I know there are other ways to relax, have fun etc, but I no I wont get out of hand, I no I can control myself and I no in the morning when Im coming down that my drug craving is over for at least a month.
I diss using drugs everyday, I diss smoking pot everyday coz thats just way too full on. But if you're only using drugs once in a while, I dont see the problem. It all comes down to self control tho, I guess....some people have it, some poeple dont.
I know I have it.

But while saying that let me also say when I die from lung cancer I will blaming no one but myself. We all make our own beds...

I never make my bed......................

I have seen my family member so hopped on drugs that he has taken a knife to his own child's throat.

Doing drugs around kids under 18 y/o I also diss. Until you are that age you shouldn't be subjected to shit like that for that reason.

But I still stand by my own personal belief that the drugs I take don't fully get me "hopped" to the point where I cant control myself, Ive never been that whacked, so therefore are not endangering in any way shape or form.
I no most of you will disagree with that and put it down to my childish ignorance of not wanting to accept the harsh realities of life, or some shit like that...but I am accepting the harsh realities of life being that drugs can kill, yes, smoking can cause premature death, and cancer, yes, exessive boozing will really fuck you up as well...but I can control myself and I understand the risks Im taking when I play with the shit I take, and while I can do this, my opinion of drugs on MY BODY will be a neutral one.

Heaven bent to take my hand, and lead me through the fire.
Be the long awaited answer, to a long and painful fight.
