To me, people kill because of the childhood they had. Take Jeff Dahmer for example, he felt unwanted and grew very distant from everyone, even his parents. Some do it because they were rejected by the opposite sex, or even same sex. But, a lot of killers almost had no motivation. I don't know exactly why people do the things they do, but I'm sure thats a question that will be answered sooner or later...

The rush, hatred, power and curiosity. Ending someone's life, a life thought to be useless and with little value or just someone that's caught you on a really bad day. The power you hold to stop them from ever seeing another day. The sounds of bones being crushed, the screams. The ripping of skin and warm blood. The gleam in an eye fading away.

If you are talking about just serial killers, I know that several serial killers had brain damage happen as children.

It also varies, many killers grow up being abused and learn early on to shut down emotions. Nearly every serial killer you find was abused as a child. So far, I haven't studied a serial killer who was just born "evil".
Several will kill because violence was all they were around as children. If you grow up being taught that violence is normal it is hard to just stop because someone tells you to.
Vilence becomes hardwired into the brain. Children who grow up without any positive affection, I.E; Hugging, being told they are loved etc. The dopamine levels go low and eventually stay low.

It takes more to excite and arouse. In several cases actual positive affection on these people can cause severe mental anguish.
For them, a "normal" sex life would be like telling us to go out a rape and or murder someone. Not only ridiculous but pointless.

Many grow up hating the abuser or empathizing with them, either way the result is rarely well-balanced. Mind, I am not saying every abused child is going to grow up to be a murderer. I am just saying was I have observed.

Personally though, the only things that could drive me to kill would be of course self-defense and if someone was trying to kill someone I loved.

If anyone has any questions about serial killers, post them and I will answer them. And if I don't know the answer, I will lie ;)

Maistresse

There has to be other things factored into the equation though Maistresse cause not everyone that is abused as a child becomes a serial killer or a murderer. Most people that are abused turn into troubled adults but don't cross the border between right and wrong. So abuse or neglect by itself cannot be used as a reason to become a killer.

There are a million different reasons one human may take the life of another. When discussing serial murderers specifically, it must be acknowledged that an abnormal or abusive childhood, is not always a factor in the development of a serial criminal. Many had hard working, caring parents who are as puzzled as everyone else as to why thier boy must make human lampshades. Some serial murderers are abused as children, or experience some sort of trauma during key moments of growth and development.
The key to serial murder is Power....
The subject feeds on fantasy, and is fueled by the desire to dominate others, often due to a lack of control in thier own lives.
These days a S.M. must be clever, presice, patient, and above all, ambitious. It's much harder to pick up a pretty hitchhiker than it used to be. And practice makes perfect. Self control is key to any sucessful career as a killer. The "Holy Trinity" of serial pattern behavior warning signs: Pyromania, Enuriesis(bed-wetting beyond a normal age), and animal cruelty. The thrill of kill is much like sexual climax, the depression that often follows is like Post-coital depression. You find yourself alone in bed, and compelled to find another lover. You find yourself alone inside and compelled to shed more blood.
Serial murder is personal, and each subject has a signature, a touch all his own that betrays the motivation, the emotion that pusles though him at the victims last breath. Sex is often irrelevent, in that many victims are not sexually assaulted by the murderer, at least not in the usual sense. A knive becomes a penis, and a death cry becomes an orgasm.
Somewhere there is a hole inside the serial criminal, and once blood is shed, rehabilitation is impossible. It is an addiction, killing.
Ted Bundy was finally located and captured because instead of hunter, his addiction to domination began to dominate him. Like a drug addict who does as his dope tells him to, Ted got caught because he lost his cool.
When killing cats loses it's fun, and peeping into windows just don't cut it, the S.M. sets his sights on the ultimate trophy. Us.
Imagine if you will how it must feel to lay your hands on someone, cotrol them, terrify them, confuse them, humiliate, degrade, defile, decieve, and finally take from them the only thing left. Life itself. Many S.M.'s in captivity still think longingly of the pleasure they felt looking at the still twisted body of thier first victims.
The truth is, the motive for serial murder varies from person to person, but underneath the symptoms, the disease is the same across the board. Control.

I never said every single serial killer is born evil. I am just stating the pattern I have seen over the past years of study.

I did not mean to imply that I knew about every serial killer living or dead. We all make mistakes. So if anyone does know about any serial killers who did come from well-adjusted homes with lots of love and affection, please tell me their name and when he/she lived.

I am not being sardonic, I am being completely sincere. As I said I have yet to find one who did come from a loving home. I am however always happy to learn something new.

Thank You

P.S...
Bloodsire, I am quite aware that killing is a sexual high for serial killers. I do apologize if my previous post was unclear about that.

It seems to me that what drives people to kill is the initial urge of aggression and a sort of uncontrolable impulse. But when one looks into how things got to that point, I find that it is largly related to a feeling of helplessness. We all feel as though we have little control over the things that happen around us, but when it is taken to an extreme and combined with feelings of inadequeacy I believe it is a catalyst for the breakdown of anything that would separate man from the rest of the animals.

I also apologize if my comment was misunderstood. I am aware that there are a million variables in the making of a murder. Childhood memories, losses, abuse......... on on on. It is not so easy to extract accurate, trustworthy info from the tangled neurons in thier minds. In the end, despite the reason for the fantasy, we always learn the most from the dead. Bloodspray patterns, physical attack and injury. The hardest part of deciding why one may kill, is to decide how one has lived. How the criminal may have grown, trying to decide his sophistication level, secretor/non-secretor, etc...........also, the level of violence commited upon the victims body.
Bad childhoods may play in part cause a wwithdrawing, a hiding away from all that hurts him. This is when the fantasy begins to grow.

People tend to become serial killers or killers in general because of child abuse or some sort of abuse at all. But not all of them kill because of abuse. Some just want the power to control or something triggers it. Such as a word said or an action. Killing also has a lot to do with brain damage and anger.

What would trigger me to kill? Nothing. If I were to kill, I would kill for the sheer pleasure of it. As someone posted on here, "the rush". Fuck "the rush" of it all. Most people I know would kill for the power of taking another life, or have a motive behind it, like "my girlfriend screwed this one guy" and by the anger and new found lack of self worth and betrayal twards her, commit a "crime of passion"? Meh.. If I were to kill, it would be some random fuck on the street. Now if I were to do such a thing and I got caught, it would be said that by constantly being picked on in school, moving around a lot as a child, not having many friends and a preferance of not wanting to be near many people would all play into it. But when I sit here and think about it, that has nothing to do with it. If I were to kill, it would be because I felt like killing someone, and I know that it would become an addiction, like when you get your first tatoo. If I were to kill, I would want to be caught, other wise, why would I risk throwing away whats left in my life? Its just like doing drugs, if your stupid enough to do drugs, do something that has a high risk of killing you your first try.

Fear is another factor that could make you try your hand at killing someone. Of course, primal fear is akin to hate, and relates nicely to anger. Plain morbidity would be another factor, curiosity another. One thing is for certain: if you choose to kill, for whatever reason, the memory, whether pleasurable or damning, will either steer you to keep on doing it, or fill your conscience with durable regret. Economic gain is also a factor in killing. Sheer macho posture can also result in murder, but I guess that would fall into a more general category. Alfredo Rios Galeana, kidnapper, bank robber, consummated escape artist, and notorious killer, when asked how it felt to kill somebody, responded tersely:"Nothing. It's like cutting a flower". Mayhap he is right...

A good gardener will tell you that in order to insure the health and longevity of a garden, it is necessary to weed out the plants that do not thrive, to remove the wilted petals and leaves which may cause undo stress to the healthy parts of the plant.
Hunting advocates insist that without the seasonal slaughter of deer and other wild animals, overpopulation would occur, and the delicate balance of nature would be disturbed.
Serial killers are sometimes reffered to as 'The hunters of humans'. Should we begin handing out permits to the murderers in our midst, so that the human race will no longer have to carry the burden of the elderly, the handicapped, the infirm? Sounds absurd dosen't it? The real absurdity lies in the fact that serial murder is not just an occasional event, it is in fact more like an epidemic. The irony is that though we would never give a psychopath a liscence to kill, we seem to have no trouble turning our heads and ignoring the steadily rising body counts, as long as our own daughters and sons remain untouched by tragedy, we could really give a fuck if a few hundred hookers turn up missing every year. What's one more junkie death, after all? One less recipient of public assistance.
Sounds harsh huh? Survival of the fittest is an instinct hardwired into our brains, and besides....someone has to tend to the issue of population control! Perhaps we could start drowning baby girls, the way some Asian societies have. Or initiating a selective breeding program similar to the one Hitler endorsed...
An even better idea occurs to me...For society to practice what it preaches, and hold all men and women as equals. When we cease turning away from someone we believe to be less fortunate, or deserving than ourselves, there will be no expendable lives. Hunting will become far more challenging an enterprise for the serial predator.

I think more people than are willing to admit would like to kill at one time or another. I also think the difference being the lack of true confidence in getting away with it is the first hurdle. Then the guilt and moral issues come into play.
Like mentioned in some previous posts, most serial killers have abuse or neglect in their backgrounds. That would account for the level of desensitization of emotion, guilt, fear or anxiety that would normally restrain the desire of most people to act on their desire to murder.
Means, Motive, Opportunity and Perception of Success in getting away with it.

I recently had a discussion in a letter with a serial to whom I write in Alabama on the Glover case which occurred many years ago in Australia. I found his response interesting, as I am sure will crypt members. This is a direct quote from his letter:

"I have no doubt in my mind that 100% of serial killers indulge in some form of necrophilia with their victims. It just doesn't make sense not to, especially when the compelling motivator in most serial episodes is sexual. Which isn't saying that every victim is necrophiled, but I cannot believe that a pretty high percentage are not. It's simply part and parcel of the patterns and cycle manifestation a serial experiences. He kills, and he explores the depths and spectrums of death, advancing through stages that allow him to advance deeper and deeper into the perimeters (sic) and degress of murder. So there's no doubt in my mind that sexual motives were at the core center of Glover's motivations, and despite what people are led tp believe (probably based on his denial during analysis or questioning) I'm sure he's involved himslef in things that will never be revealed."

Funny that you say that H, because in this age of forensic intelligence, it is becoming more difficult to commit violent crime and get away with it. So, to be tidy in ones routine helps to insure that the job gets done on a consistent basis. It pays to 'not get none on ya'. Violent serial criminals rarely roll around in the blood and guts of thier victims, 'like a pig in shit'. More often, the killer takes great pains to maintain a strange sort of distance from his victim. The psychological contradictions that go hand in hand when a murderer can torture, and rape the victim (intercourse being a very definite form of intimacy), and still maintain an almost clinical and sterile distance from the deceased, is an interesting point of study. We must bear in mind at all times though, when discussing serial murderers, that the victim as an individual is second in importance to the fantasy of the killer. A mere shell, a vessel, a tool. A thing to be used and then discarded, like so much in our culture these days. Condoms, fast food, dead girls, etc... Feed the beast, toss out the paper plates and cups. There are so many variations on the theme of signature murder that we could go on and on about the actual processes involved in the killing itself. The question at hand is "What makes you want to kill?" To ask "Why would you kill this way?", is to open another can of worms all together. It's really a Pandoras box of death....

That is exactly the difference between you and a 'serial', H. The M.O and signature individual to the killer are in themselves inseperable from the act if murder. These men, and sometimes women arecompelled, driven, even forced into the dirty deed by the fantasy which must be fulfilled, the idea of absolute control, and the rush of euphoria found in the bloody mess. There is method to the madness, and just like handwriting, a 'serial' can be tagged by his method. It is necessary to complete the perfect moment of death orchestrated by the fantasy in thier minds. Your scenario of anger or vengance fueled homicide is as unlike the process of serial murder as are Vodka and breastmilk. Two entirely different creatures....
