Cases like this make us
consider the truly important questions about ghosts. Clearly Erika
Davis can have had this experience in only one of several ways.
Skeptics will say it was just a coincidence, as it may have been. To
them her dream was made to fit reality after she learned of the death
thanks to the mind's unconscious use of selective memory. Witnesses
rarely accept this suggestion - but would not do so, of course, if it
were true. Their memory would be sincerely believed even if it had
been subconsciously modified. There is no way to be sure who is
correct. However, assuming that we accept a supernatural theory might
be required, there are two further options to consider.
In the first possibility, Erika's mind detected her father's death as
it happened some distance away. Her dream used this incoming data to
create an hallucination. It was as if a distress flare crossed time
and space and impressed its message on to the woman's sleeping mind.
If we acknowledge the reality of telepathic communication, this is
possible, but did her father's mind know that he was dying as the
heart attack struck? Could his unconscious mind send out such a
message to her?
These are questions we cannot answer. But the fact that the event
seems to have occurred around the point of death supports this
explanation fairly well. Indeed, we know from other cases that
hallucination is undeniably a factor.
