A Clinton in The Making?
SCOTTSDALE, AZ - Political candidate Gary Tredway didn't tell a single lie - he told a whole string of them. Tredway, running for the City Council in Scottsdale, Arizona, said he was an orphan from California and went to college for three years. It turns out that he didn't go to college, wasn't born in California and isn't an orphan. Heck his name's not even Gary Tredway, either. But his was a graceful exit from the race... he lied about having leukaemia when he announced he was dropping out of the race.
No Shirt, No Shoes, No Underwear, No Service
NEW YORK - Folks in a tightly packed town like New York will forgive a lot of bizarre behaviour in the interest of getting along. But the owners of one restaurant had to draw the line when a patron insisted on eating his meals in the nude, especially since the business was closed at the time. The Tottenville Inn installed a surveillance camera to catch a thief who had been terrorizing the new business. When the tapes were reviewed the owners were surprised to see their landlord, Albert Hohmann, helping himself to expensive cuts of meat and vintage wines in the empty restaurant. But the unexplainable part is that Hohmann was walking around completely nude. Often he would top his nocturnal visits with minor vandalism, like turning on water taps and flooding the restaurant. Hohmann is a city fire-fighter currently suspended for petty larceny and criminal mischief charges.
Don't Think We Can Get Out of This One Girlies - It's Now Legal!
GRETNA, Louisiana - In case you were wondering, it's now legal to throw women's panties from Carnival floats in this Louisiana town. The Gretna City Council voted 4-0 Monday night in favour of the new law. Panties were originally part of a bill that makes it illegal to throw anything that depicts "male or female genitalia, is lewd or lascivious and includes, but is not limited to, condoms and inflatable paraphernalia." Panties were removed from that bill after protestors argued that panties are on display at department stores across the nation.
Mixing Business With Pleasure
COLUMBIA, SC - A printing error in some new BellSouth telephone directories lists the number for a phone-sex business under its jobline, The (Columbia) State newspaper reported. "This is terribly embarrassing," said a spokesman for Bapco, the BellSouth printing subsidiary in Atlanta. The misprint changed one digit of the 10-digit toll-free number and hookers.... I mean... hooked callers up to connection that costs $2.50 a minute. "Hi, sexy," purrs a woman's pre-recorded voice. "You've reached the live One-on-One Fantasy Line, where the girls are always hot, and ready to fulfil your every fantasy." BellSouth said it will put an electronic intercept on the misprinted number to ensure that anyone trying to call the jobline won't get the sex-line.
Teacher Leaves Student In Spain
CHICAGO, Il - A Morgan Park High School teacher may be fired for her decision to leave a 16-year-old senior in Spain after the teen lost his passport during a school-sponsored trip, Chicago Public Schools Chief Executive Officer Paul Vallas said. Christine Matishak, who returned from the three-week excursion with 16 other students on Monday, was reassigned to Board of Education headquarters Wednesday because she left Preston Ross III in Spain and she allegedly failed to initially tell school officials or the boy's parents of her actions.
Teacher Arrested For Treatment of Student
MONTGOMERY, AL - A junior high school teacher was arrested for allegedly making a 13-year-old boy urinate in a classroom trash can. Ryan Calhoun's parents said their son repeatedly asked teacher Carey Jones for permission to use the bathroom during math class until Jones told him to urinate in a waste- basket. The teen-ager said he moved the trash can to a corner of the classroom and wrapped a jacket around his waist for privacy. Jones, 26, was arrested and charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Don't Bury Fido!
TEXAS - Well, that didn't take long. Wired magazine reports a team of scientists at Texas A&M University is launching the first ever dog cloning company www.savingsandclone.com. As little as $1,000 could keep a copy of your pet alive forever. A cloned puppy has not yet been born, but the magazine reports the scientists are confident of success.
Breast Scandal In Day Care Centre
ANNAPOLIS, MD - The state Senate Judicial Proceedings committee has scheduled a hearing Wednesday to hear testimony on a bill that would make it illegal for a woman to breast-feed another woman's baby without permission. Sen. James DeGrange filed the bill after a mother complained that a day-care centre worker was breast-feeding her child.
Don't Try This One At Home
LONDON -  Heather Perry, 29, says she has finally cured her chronic fatigue by resorting to do-it-yourself brain surgery and drilling a hole in her own head. It's an ancient technique called trepanning - cutting away a section of the scalp and drilling into the skull. Perry's bid to rid herself of the inflammation of her brain and spinal chord, by drilling a two-centimetre hole to allow blood to flow more easily around the brain, almost went wrong when she drilled too far and penetrated a membrane protecting her brain tissue. She performed the operation under local anaesthetic in front of a mirror and a camera crew.
South Africa's Telkom Buys 5 Million Condoms
JOHANNESBURG - South African state-owned telecommunications utility Telkom has ordered five million condoms to help protect its workforce against the AIDS epidemic. The South African Press Association said the order could be South Africa's first corporate bulk order for condoms. The company was not immediately available for comment. South Africa has one of the world's highest rates of HIV infection, with 1,700 people estimated to contract the virus which causes AIDS every day.
103 Year Old Woman Lands Soap Opera Role
MEXICO CITY - A Mexican television producer has "discovered" a 103-year-old washerwoman from a poor Mexico City neighbourhood and turned her into an actress on an evening soap opera. Josefina Negrete debuted on Thursday as a housekeeper in the new evening soap opera "I Will Always Love You" on Mexico's Televisa network, and will continue to make sporadic appearances.
Nicotine Can Be Beneficial For The Brain
WASHINGTON - Take a toke for Alzheimer's? That's not exactly what researchers are saying, but a new study suggests that nicotine is a surprisingly potent drug for diseases of the brain, including Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and Tourette's syndrome. The drawback? Smoking is a bad way to get medical nicotine. Besides the obvious cancer risk, drug levels spike much higher in cigarettes.
Prophet From Ohio Tours United States On Foot

Is the son of God real, and has he returned to earth? If he has his name is Carl Joseph and he's from Ohio. Joseph, often referred to as the Prophet, has spent the last nine years travelling through 47 states and 13 countries preaching his traditional religious beliefs. He owns only what's on his back and survives strictly on the generosity of the people he meets. His popularity might come from his sandy beard and simple robe, but crowds still seem to gather wherever he stops to talk. He walks everywhere. And when the Prophet is stuck on a lonely stretch of highway - he hitchhikes.
