URBAN LEGENDS : A Family That Hangs Together

Date Added
FEB 2003

If you pull drive up into a driveway of a house where a family was murdered, you will see their eyes in the shadows of your headlights on the garage. This is true of a small town in Missouri where a family was brutally killed by a family member in a house high on a hill, deep in the woods by the Mississippi River. The family was slain in the garage on a bitter cold night. The murderer killed them using a shotgun. He later hung them from a tree down the curved driveway. This is where some local teenage kids discovered their bodies -- dangling in the wind. The teenagers often hassled the family because they were poor. They would throw rocks at the house and backed down the driveway before anyone could catch them. this night was different. As the teens came close to the house and saw the family on the tree, they got scared and hit the reverse fast. When they started to reverse, they hit something that broke the back window. The teens stopped and got out to see what was hit and to see if they could get out of the driveway. What they saw was a body of something. Was it one from the trees, they thought? Turning around to their surprise, all the bodies were accounted for. Who was this man that they had hit? Was he part of the family or the killer? Quickly they picked up the body and hung it from the tree. They then thought that they might get caught and charged for all the murderers, so they went and covered their tire tracks. The teens quickly left and didn't look back. Soon after that night the whole town could smell something in the air. No one was sure what it really was. It smelled of rotted food or something not alive anymore. The police searched to find the mysterious odour. A local priest called the police and reported that the family that lived on the hill had not come to get their meals from the church as usual. He asked the sheriff to check on them. Needless to say, the bodies were found decomposing in the hot summer nights. They counted all the bodies of the Henderson family, but were puzzled why there was an extra noose left hanging. The whole family was there but who was the other noose for? The news of the family broke out and frightened everyone in town, except the teens. They knew this day would come and prayed that they would not be caught for killing the man and hanging him up or at least having the police know they were there, since that body was reported missing. The next day, the teen got into his car and looked at the speedometer. His dad always made him remember how many miles he had driven in his old rusted, dented and now damaged car. " For safety purposes, son," he would say. The night of the accident he had 159,843 miles on his car, now his speedometer read 160,001 miles. He knew that his dad didn't take his car because he was out of town, so who did? Two days later when the police had arrested him for multiple homicides he had an idea. The missing body had covered up his tracks as well. Now to this day, teens will go up the driveway for a scare or they were dared. They always see the same thing, five pairs of eyes staring at them on the garage door. The legend goes that from the grave, the Hendersons burned their eyes into the door so they could catch their murderer. If you flash your lights at the door, you almost might hear the faint cries of the Hendersons as they were shot all those nights ago.
