Excited scientists named him Peking Man. He was a
collection of bones about 500,000 years old, unearthed near Peking in
the 1920s and a vital missing link in man's knowledge of evolution.
Then, in 1941, with the Japanese advancing on the city it was decided
to ship the bones to America - they still have not arrived.
Dr Harry L. Shapiro, a former Professor of Anthropology at Columbia
University, has been searching for them ever since. His theory
is that they were purloined by a Marine officer who took Peking man
back to America.
The story was given credence when a Chicago businessman offered $5,000
to anybody with information. A mysterious woman met the
businessman on the 102nd floor of the Empire State Building in New
York. She said that he husband had returned from China with
fossils of some prehistoric man. She produced a photograph of
the remains but before a deal could be made the woman disappeared
without trace.
The FBI have followed reports of GIs returning home from Asia with
strange looking skulls, as souvenirs - without success.
A Sydney businessman maintained he had acquired the bones and buried
them in a forest in Tasmania. He would reveal the spot at a
price.
It is possible that Peking Man is now in both America and Australia or
even in Britain. The mystery of this strange kidnap remains
unsolved. |
