Serious attempts to
study ghosts using scientific methods have been undertaken for over a
hundred years and began with the founding of the Society for Psychical
Research (SPR). A census of apparitions was one of their first major
achievements, and even today remains a vital contribution to
knowledge. It was updated in the 1960's by research at Oxford by Celia
Green and Charles McCreery, whose detailed analyses of all manner of
apparitions are models of how such work should be tackled. More recent
updates have added knowledge about who sees apparitions and in what
circumstances.
Apart from this kind of social study, the investigation of ghosts has
tended to proceed on an ad hoc basis - following up sightings,
recording the testimony of witnesses and, with the advent of computer
technology, compiling in-depth data bases. More direct methods of
studying ghosts are relatively recent, but these are one of the
biggest growth areas in the field. |
