A Rational Explanation? |

Research into
ghostly encounters must also allow for the possibility of conventional
explanations. Malcolm Robinson reported on an excellent study from
Scotland in 1994. A family reported that a toy guitar was playing
music at the same time each night, although nobody was near the
instrument. When a vigil was mounted the music did indeed float across
the room as the guitar sat passively by the wall. Was a ghostly form
responsible? Intrigued, the researchers conducted a full-scale
investigation and eventually took the guitar away for tests. But out
of its environment not a peep was heard from the instrument. The truth
only dawned when cameras were set up to record the next expected
visitation by the spectral musician. The music arrived on cue but this
time the sound was traced to its source. In a cupboard behind it was
another toy, hidden under the household clutter. Owing to a slight
fault in its electronics this toy was playing the same song at a
preset hour each day. Both family and researchers had simply assumed
that the music was coming from the guitar. It had taken luck and
dedicated investigation to find the true culprit. |
