Throughout the 1930's an unknown killer murdered 12 people in Cleveland. It first started in September 1935 when the bodies of two decapitated men were found in a rundown area of Cleveland. Both bodies had been mutilated and decapitated. The work of this sadist suggested a homosexual - but this theory changed when other corpses turned up that were female. Over the next 3 years the Torso Killer claimed 12 victims - all vagrants and poor people, male and female. The victims were killed and cut up before being transported to the crime scene where they were dumped. In some cases the decapitated head was never found. Elliot Ness was in charge of the investigation. In August 1938 so desperate was Ness to stop the murders that he ordered police to raid the run-down area near Kingsbury run where most of the victims had been taken from; hundreds of vagrants were arrested and the place was burned down, then the murders stopped. The identity of the Torso Killer was never determined.

This is a case that always fascinated me. There's a great fictionalized account of it called TORSOS by John Peyton Cooke. I do recall an episode of Unsolved Mysteries that mentioned that Elliot Ness actually knew who the killer was, but couldn't prove it. The murderer, according to Ness, was a member of a prominant family in Cleveland and had had himself committed. There is also a speculation that The Torso Slayer may also be the person responsible for Elizabeth Short aka The Black Dahlia murder in L.A. Even though this person would've been in a mental hospital at the time of the killing, they were there voluntarily and could leave the hospital whenever they wanted. Granted, there isn't enough evidence to actually prove this scenario. But, there are very similar details regarding the Cleveland murders and how Elizabeth Short was murdered.

Here's a freaky little aside...

While speaking to a diagnosed 'paranoid delusional schizo' lady named, say, 'Tina', I was let in on one of her many 'visions' which God allowed her to see. Tina had a gift of clairvoyance and prophecy, so said she. The state kept her medicated, and gave her a special diagnonsense all her own. Well, mentally ill or not, Tina told me that she saw the deaths of nearly a dozen people, she described the physical condition of the 'Torso" victims, the time frame during which the murders occured, the general locale of the crimes, and even said that the killer belonged to an "important" family in the town, a family that covered the crimes up by sending the male realative "away".
I am pretty sure that 'Tina' was not a 'true crime' buff, having spoken with her extensively, and she seemed genuinely puzzled as to why God would show her such terrible things when she could'nt do anything at all about them, or really even understand them. True, her 'visions' were not limited to unsolved grisly murders, and at times were so eccentric in nature as to be almost laughable....but what if she really did have to live with nightmares of grisly deaths which occured before she was even born? I have been trying for almost a year now to match up murders to 'Tinas' visions, and have been at a loss until now.
Maybe, just maybe, a paranoid scizo in GA state mental hospital has insight into more than a few puzzling cases.
Too bad she's fuckin crazy....(Maybe it is a tale worth following up)

(True story, I swear)
