Dropping a large knife into your foot is said to be very bad luck.

In my neck of the woods (so to speak), if someone opens a pocketknife, no one but he who opend it will close it. Some undefined bad luck is believed to come from closing a blade put into use by another....
Here in the south, no self respecting man or woman is caught dead without a 4 inch blade in thier pockets, so the social (not legal) rules in effect about the use of our knives are long standing, and not flexible....
As with most superstitions, the reasons for these rules are not always explainable, but are definitley in place for some reason, and respected by most all....

Never give a knife to anyone as a housewarming present or else they will become your enemy.

When setting the table, always point the blade of the knife inwards. To point it outwards is an aggressive gesture which will lead to arguements around the table.
