Fever may be abated by drinking boiled onions or alternatively by carrying a key in the palm of the hand.
Boiled onions do actually have a curative effect on high temperature in some cases, depending on the source of the fever, so that this old wives' tale has some grounding in medicine. Boiling and eating onions is said to stimulate the liver and enhance the blood circulation, which in turn helps the stomach to function more efficiently. Carrying the key in the palm of the hand, conversely, only derived its power from an idea. In most medieval home medicine, cure was believed to be facilitated by transference of sickness, either into another person or an item such as a tree, a flower or in this case a key. The key was particularly significant because it unlocked or locked things and thus was connected with security.
