Hi, i realised you posted this quite some time ago, do you still need some advice? I have no plants in my tank and no gravel. I have plastic wood like logs for hiding in. My 2 females had eggs all over the ground, logs, filter and where ever there was something to grab hold onto. So you dont really need more plants (from my experience) but it helps. For the babies, growing brine shrimp is the perfect food when they are freashly hatched. Getting a shrimp hatcher will make things so much easier. Make sure you wash the shrimp in fresh water before you put them in the tank for feeding. I clean the bottoms of the tanks with gravel cleaner each day and replace with new water. So i dont use filters with the babies, they could get sucked up! I have a low flow filter for my adult axolotls tanks, anything to strong will damage their skin (they will look like they are shedding skin) and it can damage their gills. I hope this helps. regards miz kez
