Shut away from the world in an isolated monastery in the hills of Lebanon, one of the most remarkable women of the last century waited to become Queen of the Jews. Lady Hester Stanhope, once a glamorous figure in London society, had been told by fortune-tellers and self-styled prophets that this was to be her destiny.
Lady Hester waited to wed the new Messiah
The predictions had started long ago in England; they were repeated again in the East. Passages from scriptures and lines from ancient Arab manuscripts had been show to her to prove she was to become the long awaited bride of the new Messiah.
She died alone
Lady Hester had power and influence among the Arabs and many of the ruling sheiks regarded her with awe. But as the years went by, she became more eccentric and was abandoned by those once close to her. She died peacefully in June 1939 at the age of 63, still isolated in her monastery and surrounded by rubbish.
