NORTHERN Territory police have rejected a woman's claim that she is Azaria Chamberlain.

The woman walked into Alice Springs police station this week claiming to be the baby girl who disappeared from near Uluru 25 years ago.

Nine-week-old Azaria disappeared from a tent while her family was on a camping holiday at Uluru on August 17, 1980.

Her family have never wavered from their claim that a dingo took the baby.

Alice Springs police today confirmed they were investigating the woman's claim.

"The woman came into the police station on Wednesday and made a number of extraordinary claims, including that she was Azaria Chamberlain," a police spokeswoman said.

"At this stage the woman's claims have all been discounted."
According to News Limited newspapers, the woman claimed to have had flashbacks to when she was nine weeks old and found herself between the jaws of a dingo, and that she had been rescued by Aborigines and given to a white family.

The claims come after police in October last year shot down an extraordinary story by Melbourne pensioners Frank Cole that he killed a dingo and found a baby in its mouth on an August night in 1980, but kept the discovery secret.

The Northern Territory Coroner's Office ruled out reopening the inquest into Azaria's death as it was not satisfied there were any new facts to warrant such a move.

At the time Lindy Chamberlain-Creighton said she never really believed Mr Cole's claims, but called for a formal apology from the NT government.

Ms Chamberlain-Creighton spent more than three years in jail over the murder of her nine-week-old daughter, before she was pardoned and her conviction quashed.

Her former husband Michael Chamberlain received a suspended sentence after he was convicted of being an accessary after the fact, which was also later quashed.

The poor Chamberlains...they had to go through all that b/s when Azaria was snatched and now all these crackpots with wild stories are popping up. That's very sad.

You know, it took me forever to figure out this case was the source of the "a dingo took my baby!" quote. It doesn't get the extensive long-term coverage here in the USA that I'm sure it does in Austraila. I think it took multiple watchings of "The Adventures of Priscilla: Queen of the Desert" and a Crime Library feature with the name 'Chamberlain' in the little for me to put these facts together. Oh well - the case was just a little before my time. And I'd love to see the pic of the woman claiming to be Azaria! Who has flashbacks to nine weeks' of age? That's ludicrous.
