The eating of small wheaten cakes was onces sacred to Dionysus, Alonis and Osiris. By consuming bread dedicated to these gods, devotees believed that they were partaking of the gods' divine essence.
The practice of eating dedicated bread is still observed in the Christian Communion. In medieval times, people put such faith in Communion bread that they carried it off and used it in magical charms and for healing the sick.
Other superstitions about bread:
- No one should sing while making bread
- Setting a loaf of bread upside down on a table is considered unlucky
- If bread is left uneaten on your plate, bad luck will follow
- For any person to take the last slice of bread from a plate is unlucky, unless the head of the table offers it to them. Then, you are the 'lucky last' and eat the bread offered, good luck, love and money will be yours
