In about late 2000 early 2001 I started to visit a now-defunct Internet forum called "The Cannibal Cafe". It was a forum filled with people either volunteering to be eaten or people looking for volunteers to eat. I remember thinking "If I post here I'll get put on a list!" or that one of the posters might be a undercover cop(like the ones that pretend to be 13 year old girls to catch Internet pedophiles). Don't get me wrong I suspected that the majority of them were full of shit, but that was just the kind of environment that a real cannibal/killer could voice his fantasies undetected. Imagine my surprise when I see a ABC special on Armin Meiwes. In March of 2001 Bernd-Juergen Brandes responded to Meiwes (he posted under the name Franky) post on the "The Cannibal Cafe " for a "well built man to eat". They met at Brandes Rotenburg home were Meiwes severed and cooked Brandes penis. They ate it together, and at some point Meiwes stabbed Brandes, and butchered him. Meiwes recorded the dissection on a camcorder. Someone reported Meiwes ads to the police. In Germany "killing for sexual pleasure" carries a maximum of only 15 years! Meiwes got 8.
Serial killers often follow the careers of other killers. So odds are a killer or killers have viewed this site, or even posted.

Even though it is probably true that most of the discussion on a caniibalistic website is bullshit, the fact remains that the underground trend of consentual cannibalism is growing. Those who engage in cannibalistic or sado-masochistic behavior actively as part of a sub or counter culture usually do not indulge in the deadly fantasies which pre-occupy the minds of serial criminals. Even though cannibalism is generally viewed as a disgusting and immoral practice, it is nevertheless a branch of the same dark tree which houses different cliques of bondage, body modification, and other fetishes practiced with extremity, but also with discretion. These fetishists rarely if ever become the perpetrators of violent serial sexual crimes. Other than the exception of the predator whose victim pool may include the members of such dark hidden worlds, the likelihood of finding a murderor in the ranks is not really so good.
Some mornings, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps. |
