It should be a given that human beings have the right to alter, modify, or destroy thier bodies at will. Is it worse to chop off your own fingers and call it art, or to smoke 2 packs of cigarettes a day and call it a habit? They say tattoos are addictive. I can personally testify that one leads to another. Often for unexplainable reasons. Pain is so sweet sometimes, especially when you have control over it!

For me, tattooing and piercing is a way for me to express in a tangible, physical way, the anguish that often consumes my brain. When there is pain inside, but no one to really blame it on, nothing to relieve it, nothing to take it out on...sometimes the best release is controlled, self inflicted pain. It is stress relief in a way. Many people do not understand this because inner pain and conflict is often ignored, or dismissed as being "bad". There is no pleasure without pain, however, and I find it extremely theraputic and healthy to embrace both sides of the spectrum with equal enthusiasm. I must admit though, that pleasure is often greeted by me with some skepticism and suspicion, since it is the less permanent of the two conditions.

They say pain is all in the mind.........I have 3 tattoos now and none of them hurt. I got that inside bit of my ear pierced (no idea what its called, I just pointed and said pierce it ) and that didnt hurt either. I had a tetnus shot at the docs the other day and nearly passed out coz I looked at the needle...fukn hurt like all hell too. Go figure.
Some physical pain hurts more than words can describe, yet it never seems to hurt as much a wound to the soul.............

Needles have never bothered me. In fact, in my younger years I wanted to be a heroin addict! For some reason it seemed romantic is a twisted sort of way...I have since gotten over that aspiration. Tattoos don't always hurt Iceheart, you are correct on that point. But still, it is minor surgery in a way, and even the healing process is an ordeal. Of course, I guess it depends on how extensive your tattooing is. Mine is fairly elaborate, and mostly tribal, which means TONS of black ink packed into intricate patterns. But I think maybe we are getting off the subject of tongue splitting. Maybe we should have a 'Body Modification' forum which covers issues from piercing to tounge splitting... I personally have never been much of a hisser myself!

I avoid, whenever possible, having any portion of my mortal envelope pierce by metal. This holds extreme negative connotation for me, personally, though I do find it attractive "in" some women. Bloodsfire, as always, makes several excellent points, (no pun intended) particularly regarding controlled pain. An outlet for the sufferings, major or minor, I think an important topic, which many ignore. I have my sculpture, firearms, knives, if putting pain or ex-tasy into a sculpture, wood work, building, restoration of an antiquarian object does naught cut it, I can throw knives, shoot firearms or crossbow, compound bow, if compound does naught cut it, sometimes sinking into the forest, hearing the streams or the howling yipping coyotes works. Sometimes helping a lady in duress negates all, and makes me feel good. The outlets are multiple, and many sided. One merely has to decide what works. I have many wounds, physically speaking, so inflicting more scars on my flesh is quite repugnant to me. Tattoo, I have only one, a military one. But I do respect, if someone wishes tribal art on their body....like a moving 3-D painting! The thing is, think, think 10 years back, the things you were into, (bands, food, basic beliefs) and then think cautiously of tattooing it into your flesh, your mortal envelope. Some are quite committed, know their path, some sailors have the name of a Singapore slut tattoed on their chest. I mean NO insult, just another thought wave! Some things stick with you, others fade and die. It will All-ways be so.
Hugs, Ro-batted
