People used to visit wells to pray to the nymphs and offer them gifts by throwing valuable objects into the waters. In return, it was believed that the water nymphs would grant the gift-givers' hearts' desire or cure an illness. This popular custom continues to be practiced each time we throw coins into wishing wells. Holy springs like Lourdes in France are still dedicated to healing the sick for protecting people from misfortune. Holy water is also used by most religions and is still supposed to have the power to dispel evil.
