Hey I live in Perth and I was wondering if anyone knew where to get axolotls here. All the pet stores I know don't seem to have them, so the last place in my mind is City Farmers.
The main part about this is... I have a 35cm x 20cm tank with some crappy thing that just bubbles air through it. I was wondering if I kill the goldfish in it will it be a suitable place for one axolotyl, I've heard the goldfish are annoying little buggers that nibble at their gills. Will I need anything else some sort of filter, bubblers or any suggestions.
And last I was planning on feeding them on live food. I was gonna breed guppies and feed it to the axy (not when it's really young tho) and some worms from a compost thing (which i would wash). Is that healthy for them? Is it easy to breed guppies?
Thanks in advance, answers to any of these questions or any tips for a new owner would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, it sure is quiet around here ;)
I'm in Sydney, so can't help you with where to get them. Some breeders will ship interstate, though, which might be worth asking after.
I wouldn't put an axolotl in a tank less than 10 gallons, but I think people say you can put one in 5gal. Guess it depends how comfy you want to make him! Work out the volume and go by that.
Don't kill your goldfish!! Give it to a petshop, at least - don't kill it! :(
You're probably better buying feeder fish from a petshop (they look a little like danios here - they may be different over there), I doubt you'd have much luck breeding your own fish, it'd be way more trouble than it's worth. I feed mine tubifex worm cubes, frozen beef and bloodworms. Variety is the key. Earthworms are good also, but I've only ever seen them used bought from petshops/suppliers, not bred at home - I'm not sure how careful you'd need to be about what was in the soil and stuff.
Have a look at www.caudata.org, they've got a fantastic axolotl care page, read it over, it should answer your questions :)

I'm a Perthie too.
I got my Monty from Aquarium City... It's on Railway Parade on the corner of Grand Promenade... I think... I'm awful with directions
Went there yesterday to pick up some feeder fish, a small tank and a few snails to eat some of the icky tank slime. They have about 6-7 axies there, colour-wise there's a couple of albino, a couple of black speckly ones and a sort of yellowy-orange one as far as I can remember. Probably a few more.
I also saw one at the Broadway pet shop, if that's closer... I have close to no idea about Perth geography, odd since I've lived here all my life.

a few weeks back... My friend lives right next door to the car park and he keeps fish, so I go whenever he needs to go shopping there
Tell me if they still have one! It looked like the tank was an axy tank... Still, not sure about prices, etc. I quite liked the variety at Aquarium City.

I went today and they had an azy tank. But guess what? No axy in the actualy tank! But they were $25 anyway so I think I'll go to another place my friend suggested... Vebas?
I'll definately have to get me some feeder fish though... did they say those feeder fish you have will reproduce?

Hi all, Sutto here(from perth). The feeders over here are known as Gambusia and they do breed easy. They are the same species etc as Guppies just less fancy tails. Robbie: What suburb are you In? I am currently selling an Axy (Tank Possibly) if your interested. It is like dark greeny with black spots and appx. 19cm If your interested. PM as I am looking to sell asap but after this weekend. BTW sorry if this isnt allowed. If any body wants to ask me questions I can be PMed or MSN'ed at dljunior2002(a)msn.com although you need to replace (a) with a @. Any more questions feel free to ask as Before this I had a fair bt experience and can tell you a reasonable amount about filters etc. and fish stuff and some axy stuff. |

Thanks anyway but I was sort of looking foward to getting a baby, or at least a nice young one. I'm pretty sure I'll just get it from Vebas.

Umm.... I saw little ones at pet Magic in Cannington the other day although they were $25.... Axolotls are expensive in perth. Try Vebas or Aquotix (Aquotix Being Cheaper.) |

My friend said Vebas would be about $15 - $20 from his experience. The little ones are cheaper but I want the younger ones anyways.
