A 16-inch mummified crocodile penis and cobra snake wine used as an aphrodisiac were among the bizarre exhibits of a museum owner sentenced to community service today for dealing in endangered species.
Father-of-three Robert Hudson, 38, also had macabre exhibits including human skulls and a human penis and was caught returning from Africa with skulls from protected animals.
Airport customs men found three skulls belonging to baboons, four from other monkeys and one from a turtle after opening his suitcase.
When his shop and adjoining museum were searched they discovered a banned dolphin skeleton hung from the ceiling after eight pints of maggots were used to strip off its flesh along with the penises, Southwark Crown Court was told.
Hudson who lives above his shop called Puffedz in Newquay, Cornwall, pleaded guilty to three counts of smuggling skulls into Britain in March last year and one of acquiring the skeleton for commercial purposes.
He appeared at court for sentencing. Not guilty verdicts on three other counts alleging the acquisition and sale of other primate skulls were entered on a court file.
Hudson’s illicit trade was discovered shortly after he arrived at Gatwick from the Gambian capital of Banjul in West Africa.
As he strode through the green channel he was stopped by customs men. They found the primate and turtle skulls wrapped in clothing and plastic film. Also discovered were a number of sharks’ teeth necklaces and some sharks’ jaws.
His shop and small museum, open to the public at £1 a time, was also searched. Apart from 20 human skulls, tiger skins and pelts from other big cats investigators found the crocodile penis, a tusk and tail of an elephant, a hippo tooth and the snake wine.
Hudson told the officers he had collected the skulls and curios from antique fairs because it was his hobby and he could sell a human skull for up to a £100.
He said he had got the monkey skulls in his suitcase after travelling on safari in Gambia where he went into the jungle and traded pens and pocket torches for the items with tribal villagers.
Also recovered at the shop was a short video and an e-mail relating to the dolphin skeleton. The video showed him pouring maggots over a dead dolphin in an old bath in his garden.
The e-mail sent to a taxidermist chat-room explained what it was all about. “I’ve got a problem,” Hudson wrote. “Her indoors brought home a dolphin the other day... I skinned it and took most of the flesh off it, put it in an old bath and threw eight pints of fishing maggots on it. They are eating it slowly.”
Miss Jennifer Gray, defending, said Hudson had no previous convictions and had been with his current partner for 13 years. They had one son and her husband had two children from a previous marriage. Miss Gray said Hudson had an interest in wildlife and would not do anything to endanger species.
“He has a genuine interest in unusual things,” she added.
Judge James Wadsworth QC said he accepted Hudson was bringing in the items to show in his museum.
He added that the items were not of the most rare or valuable variety and could therefore spare him a custodial sentence.
Hudson was given 120 hours community service on each of the three counts of smuggling skulls with no separate penalty with regard to the dolphin skeleton. He was also ordered to pay £1,500 court costs.
A report prepared for the case by Stephen Brend, a senior conservationist with Indonesia’s orang-utan foundation, said the items Hudson had been found with represented a “major threat to the survival of a number of primate species”.
He said if people collect such wildlife treasures it would create a market and lead to professional hunters killing more animals.
Hudson said outside court: “I wish to apologise to my family and all those close to me for the stress and worry that this has caused over the last year.”

If the animal was already dead before he aquired the body parts, like what seems to have happened, whats wrong with that? If hes killing the animals (and humans) to get the bits unfair (and murder!), but I dont see the problem in displaying bones and bits and pieces of animals already dead before he aquired the parts. I myself would pay a pound to go and see em.

Ya, there are lots of medicology museums, also naturalist, armour, anatomy museums displaying human bones, and other critters, I can merely presume they don't wish to allow a trend to occur of person's collecting endangered species bones. But Cobra wine?? Who the fuck is going to care if you kill a Cobra> I would like to try that wine once, twice if I LIKED it...........

Eating a little higher up on the food chain? I cannot think of one single person I'd feel safe in ingesting. God help us if stupidity can be passed through meat like salmonela. I'd rather eat a cobra. Probably not as greasy anyway. Besides, snake does taste like chicken!!
Perhaps eating lower on the food chain is the best idea of all..... Or maybe starving to death....
Yummy!

What he is doing may not be a crime in my mind but certainly he needs a healthier hobby . I would think his wife might find all this a bit odd ,Perhaps she needs to drink a bit of the cobra wine with hubby
seduce my mind and you can have my body, find my soul and I am yours forever |

+One bright day in the middle of the night, Two dead boys got up to fight. Back to back they face each other, Drew their swords and shot one another. A deaf policeman heard the noise, He came and killed the two dead boys.+

I must admit, I do see nothing wrong with the import/export of "artifacts", even if they happen to have once been human. Should the Smithsonian be indicted for illegal importation of human artifacts? Of Course not, sillies. Institutions such as the AMA and other such sociological entities only ever use human remains, (or humans, for that matter)in order to better society. This man was surely deserving of the trouble he found himself in because he was turning a prsonal profit. God Forbid!! (Surely you all catch the sarcasm in my ummm...voice?) Reminds me just a bit of an old friend who's father started out in the cocaine business by importing Anacondas from South America into the US. It took a while for authorities to catch on that the snakes were fed full of carefully wrapped kilos of coke. I do take exception to the fact that upon arrival, those marvelous reptiles were gutted for thier cargo(I am a snake, monitor lover), but really, how else would they get thier dope out? The obvious issue there was drug smuggling, not morality, but either way...under and behind and inside all we take for granted lurks another secret world, beyond imagining.
