TEXAS - For the last three years, the inmates in the Texas
Department of Criminal Justice and the State Jail Division
have worked hard in the Fall to provide gifts for 2,000
underprivileged children. With donated materials, the inmates
create stick horses, teddy bears, and various other toys to
be distributed by the Salvation Army. Estelle Unit Warden
Rick Thaler explained the many benefits, "The toy-making
project gives the offenders something worthwhile to do while
also benefiting society. That's not to mention all of the
smiles that result from these gifts." One inmate said the
project gives him a "feeling of accomplishment" and that
the "gift-giving comes from the heart, with no reward in
return."
