I've just recently bought my very first axolotl (a beautiful insanely active white that I got from the petshop at Centrepoint - $40, but I was in love!). I want to get him a mate (I think it's a him... anyone got sexing tips?) - does anyone have young axys for sale? Or recommendations for good petshops or breeders?
Thanks, Katy :)

Hey Katy, I'm sorry, i've just been hunting for a young one myseelf, and i think i might well have found the last one on the continent!! *lol*
they are few and far between at the moment. The smallest i found was 5" and i bought him, even tho he is 2" too big for what i wanted.
I found him at Parklea Markets. For fish, if you go to the well-lit pet store, the one that has bags of fighting fish flating in their tanks, they are pretty good. I don't usually buy from markets, but these guys had very few dead fish... (although, a few are mislabelled, so there are brill bargains to be had!) My boy cost me $18 and he is as thin as a rake, but is interested in food.
do you have any pics of your new critter?
Also, what size tank are they going to be in? |

The pet store in Penrith we normally by from - Bali Blue - doesn't have any Axolotls at the moment either.
Your Best Friend on the highway at St Marys however has 3 or 4 very fine looking specimens at the moment for $ 16.50 I think they were - I noticed them on Friday night when I called in for my weekly box of crickets.

| Funky, I'll have to take a look. I have no idea how to get to St Marys (I live on the lower north shore) but I'm sure I can figure it out :P Thanks. |

They're on the Great Western Highway ay St Marys so it's not too hard to find.
Give'em a call on 02 9833 7338, ask for Matt and let him know The Tank Of Death recommended you.

| The Pet Centre in the Mandarin Centre in Chatswood has a few but they are $26. The Aquarium at manly always stocks a few as well and they are $24 there, i got both mine there and they are very healthy, they were about 18cm long when i bought them. i was hoping to breed them but after lifting their skirts i found they were both males. They regularly leave their sperm sacks all over the tank. hows that for luck! i want to breed the little critters and i end up with raging homosexual axies! |

The only info I found when I was searching for a bit of info on sexing was this:
http://www.caudata.org/axolotl/physiology.htm
I'm still not -quite- sure about my Monty, but I'm assuming he's male until he surprises me.
Hope it helps a bit!

while they are young its hard to tell what sex they are
but when they mature ..... Boy can you tell if its a male
2 LARGE lumps will develope behind the back legs on each side
( )( )
the female will have a small lump right on the bottom underside behind the legs....
