As with all fish, fungal infections are common, Axolotls are very prone to this.....

most cases can be cured by using an "Anti-Fungal Treatment" wich is fine ..... FOR FISH!!!

but Axolotls have a natural occuring mucus (slimy) coating over there body's
so if you go treating any axy's by following the direction on the bottle it can eat away its own protective coating of mucus......

So heres what you do !

1, find a GOOD Anti-Fungal Treatment....
(here's one i prepaired earlyer )

(this is what i've been useing for years)

2, READ INSTRUCTIONS !!!
this one reads:
Use at a rate of 5mL per 20 litres of aquarium
water. For Tetra species, baby fish and scaleless
fish (Axolotls etc.) use at the reduced rate of
5mL per 40 litres of aquarium water.

this is still to stong for them so i make it to this spec

5mL per 50 litres of aquarium water.

and yes i can hear you now (I Don't Know how many liters there are)

find out here: http://www.ifocas.fsworld.co.uk/calculator.htm

3, turn off alllll filer systems in the tank just leave a single air stone going to circulate the water and keep the Oxy levels up

4, after 3 days of it being in the water you MUST change all the water and Clean out the tank!!!!

P.S,
DON'T USE SOAP PRODUCTS TO CLEAN TANK !!!!

Use a bio wash solution ..... (VERY EXSPENCIVE )

So here is how you make your own......

take the following and place in large pot on stove

2 Liter of Distilled Water
2 Tbl Spoons of Rock Salt
1 Tbl Spoon of Epson Salts
1 Cup of
WHITE Vinegar

light stove on low heat stir for around 10 mins until most of salt has disolved
let it cool right down to room temp

strain into a empty coke bottle

there you go you have Bio Wash !!!

hope this helps people out ......

Thats an awful lot of upheaval for a sick critter, and most of it isnt necessary.

you would lose your entire biofilter too, leading to ammonia and nitrite spikes, and that ontop of a weakened recovering immune systen isnt ideal.

The fungus cure shown is Methylene blue, Malachite green and Acriflavin if i remember correctly. be aware it will dye your tank seals blue and will kill any invertebrates in the tank(snails, shrimp, worms, etc)

I have used it at standard dosage as a short term bath (4 hours in a take away container) and it had no ill effects.

quite an efficient mixture.

you could also use
Protozin (1/2 dose)
Pimafix (full dose - for mild ailments)
Melafix (full dose - for mild ailments, can be used with pimafix)

Avoid anything with formalin (often in fish ich treatments)

NOW, the thing i take issue with is everything after step 3.
you certainly do not want to turn your filter off! egads!
What a good way to get yourself a cesspool. An airstone would be fine with small fish or axies under 2", but anything over that you still need the guts that a filter provides, possibly more than normal with a sick creature.
What you want to do is TAKE OUT THE CARBON. carbon will suck up any medication in the tank, so pull it outta there!

Why MUST you change all the water??
OK, a water change is certainly called for as those old style meds rob the water of its ability to hold oxygen, but you dont need to clean it all.
50% water change and then add your filter carbon back in. that will suck out the residual meds and your axies environment stays as stable as possible.
After 6 days or so, add new carbon. There is talk that carbon can release things that it has sucked up back into the water. I am unsure of how true this is, but better safe than sorry at this point. cheap as chips anyhoo.

now, if you dont have ammonia/nitrite test kits, add 10mL/40L of Hagen Cycle. there are lots of other biobooster products out there, this one is the fastest working one available in Australia at the present time.
This part is very important to get your biofilter back on track ;)

The biowash sounds good tho :)

If you want to nuke your tank, use plain unscented household bleach. 1:20 solution with water, swoosh it in your EMPTY tank (dont do this while you have critters in there people! *lol*) and let it stand for at least 12 minutes (thats the time it takes to penetrate the outer casings of some pathogens) and no more than an hour (it starts degrading seals)

rinse, rinse and rinse some more, and let it dry.

the bleach that may have remained in there after rinsing will dry to harmless salts.

I would only use this method if something has dropped dead or had something really really nasty in your tank. This is what you can do to prep your tank before a new occupant.

Thank you

Thankyou.. Callatya i forgot to include some details (i keep forgetting most people have less than 5 axy's Sorry ppl

I currantly have 218 axy's -=- all very healthy

when i wrote this article i didnt realise that i was talking about my situation and forgot to mention that you need to place them in a seperate tank for treatment

while in sep tank empty and clean out the other tank ... thats what i ment when i said do a complete water chang (in the orig tank) not the treatment tank

this is also why i mentioned removing ya bio filters (from the orig tank) to clean them out correctly and just place a air stone in the treatment tank.....

once you clean the original tank out and filters (change media) refill tank turn on bio filter system and alow to run for the treatment time... (mine is always 3 days)
but may be diffrent for other people as i cannot risk a fungal infection in my tanks because that means i would need to treat alllll of them (thats a lot of axy's) .. lol

see Callatya i have a Quarantine tank that any new axy's (they spend 1 week in there) or sick axy's (3days pending) are placed in for treatment before going into the other tanks .....

look here for details : https://www.shyscyberchamber.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1384

any new axy's are housed just after the week of isolation

but when the tank is empy (of axy's) it is scrubed clean then i fill it and have the bio filters running Flat out and make shore my ph levels ect.. are spot on that way the Quarantine tank is always ready with completely perfect water conditions for when i need it

(i also place 10 guppies in there to help get the "CYCLING" underway)
