Allegations of satanic abuse are to be investigated by the Metropolitan Police, after a psycho-therapist working for the government said her own clinical experience suggests it exists. Valerie Sinason, who was commissioned by the Department of Health to carry out research into satanic abuse, will present her findings in the next few months.
The report is based on allegations made by some 76 children and adults involving sexual abuse and murder.
Police investigation
But Ms Sinason, who treats people with personality disorders at the Clinic for Dissociative Studies, acknowledged there is little in the way of hard evidence to support the allegations.
"There is a lot of confusion about what constitutes evidence," she said.
She added there was a lot of clinical evidence but a court of law requires physical evidence.
The Metropolitan Police, however, has now assigned one of its senior officers to investigate some of the claims.
'Horrific'
"Nobody wishes to believe the unbelievable," Acting Detective Chief Inspector Clive Driscol said.
"Certainly the allegations that have been brought to my attention are horrific, and I want people to know that we will give them support by looking at them in every detail and if it is possible to prove it, then we will."
Ms Sinason said some evidence she has uncovered is proof that a number of children's births went unregistered.
She was prompted to investigate after allegations that unrecorded children were kept in cages specifically for satanic abuse.
Mutilated animals
"We also have evidence of sites full of mutilated animals and remains of ceremonies with different regalia," Ms Sinason said. "Also there are physical injuries on the body, which medical evidence agrees could not have been self inflicted."
She said detectives had learnt a lot from the case involving Fred and Rosemary West - particularly about how people could have been killed when no-one even knew they were missing.
Dr Joan Coleman, of the Ritual Abuse Information Network and Support Agency, defines satanic abuse as a combination of sexual abuse, physical abuse, psychological indoctrination - often combined with a particular belief system.
Way of life
"It's not just abuse within ceremonies," she said. "It's a way of life."
Dr Coleman, whose agency deals with professionals - such as therapists, lawyers and the police - who come into contact with survivors of abuse, believes that satanic abuse is more prevalent than people think.
She says the difficulty with evidence is that children will not disclose what has happened to them until they have been taken away from the perpetrators for several months, by which time, the evidence has gone cold.
Previous research commissioned by the government into organised satanic abuse followed in the wake of a number of local authority scandals, where claims were found to be without foundation.
These included clusters of allegations, such as the Orkneys and Rochdale cases in 1991 where dozens of children were removed from their homes by social workers.
Leading social anthropologist Professor Jean La Fontaine was asked to look into the allegations of torture and sexual abuse of children and adults, forced abortions, human sacrifice, cannibalism and bestiality.
Her response was unequivocal: "There is no evidence that these have taken place in any of the 84 cases studied."

Interesting. I believe all religious ideology is subject to interpretation, and I don't find this sort of thing much different from the Catholics that thought that burning 'heretic' Protestants alive back in Elizabethan times was their God-given duty. Equally horrific. I did some research into Satanism a few years back for a philosophy paper at Uni, and it's rarely this kind of thing. It's certainly a belief system unto itself, but it rarely involves butchery, abuse and depravity. At least the way this article almost presents it. Actually if Satanists spent more time just being Satanists, and less time being Anti-Christians, I think they might almost have something to say.

Interesting note : You have to be a Christian before you can be a Satanist as no other religion belives in Satan as the Anti-christ.

Perhaps. Most religious ideologies use different words to describe the same entity. They still identify themselves as distinct faiths.

That depends on which practice of "Satanism" you are following. There a many different types... A more common definition of satanism is any practice that deals with the occult, such as wicca, santeria, neopagan traditions, etc. These are not at all related and often have completely different beliefs and structures. This next paragraph sums up the general terachings of Satanism on the whole. While many Satanists argue the actual physical existence of Satan, the Satanic view of Satan/Lucifer/Set is a somewhat Gnostic one, seeing the divinity as a liberator of mankind, a principal of individuality, or as the principal of change. Satanism of the sort where believers consciously worship Satan as an evil entity or an enemy of the Christian God appears to be confined to rumor, disturbed teenagers, and bad Heavy metal music. True to some accusations, Satanists do tend to embrace a philosophy of 'relative morality,' which generally culminates in a rejection of 'antiquated' sexual mores, "embracing man's carnal nature,".
And then of course theres the Church of Satan.
Go to the Philosphy Forum if you're interested in reading more about all this Satansim stuff. I made quite a study of it awhile back after a run in with a male witch who claimed he had my soul and the pagan gods were going to rain fire down upon my breast........

I personally have relatively little concern over whether some worship Jesus on a cross and cannibalistically eat his flesh and drink his blood. Or if they wish to avow allegance to a fallen angel. But I TOTALLY draw the line if I hear of anyone beating a dog to death in a Satanic ritual. Or breeding children in cages. Time to get out the old AK-47.....
It is interesting that "the authorities" take so much time to deal with this. Perhaps I am missing the point. Are you your brother's keeper, or just waiting until a family member is affected? If you see a woman being beaten in the mall parking lot, will you step in and work to resolve the conflict? Or get the hell away as fast as you can? I involve,....and pay hard for this. But hey, could naught face myself in the mirror to shave if other-wise. And I shave every day.

Interesting to consider the fact that long before 'satanism' was ever recognized as a religion unto itself, the "Lord Almighty" routinely required the sacrifice of all sorts of animals, and even children, as a means to obtain forgiveness and favor in his eyes. Interesting also, that it was Jehovah who ordered the slaughter of male children en masse, almost like a holocaust. It was God who gambled a man's life away in some childish bet with Lucifer, and it is "Our Father, Who Art In Heaven", that first created pain, put the beasts of the earth at the mercy of mans whims, and man at the mercy of His heavenly sadistic trial and error form of creation. This same 'God' who asked a mere boy(Abel) to slaughter his favorite lamb in the herd, accepted the bloody offerring with pleasure, and then damned the sibling(Cain), for shedding 'innocent' blood! *My head swims* If indeed satanists roam the land, cutting the throats of the innocent, in attempts to please the 'Fallen One', they are only imitating the divine commands given to humankind so long ago by the God who prefers that we 'fear' him, rather than seek to please him with acts of loving kindness. Satanism is just ritualistic plagarism of a value system set into place millenia ago by a bored and sadistic creator.... Amd if I had to try and weigh out the good and bad qualities which present themselves in both 'The Morning Star' and 'The Most High', I think the Devil would pull into the lead overall for at least being more fucking consistent in his methods than God. They say that "The road to hell is paved with good intentions", I think that is because so many must have been strolling along, doing what was pleasing in the Lords sight(or so they believed), only to find that the rules had changed again, and what was holy and pleasing to God one day, became arrogant and prideful the next. Funny how the "Bible" as we know it has been honed down to what basically amounts to a very dramatic (though sometimes pointless) tale of failure, pain, and hypocrisy. Either God is a horrible story teller, or he really needs a new editing staff, because the shit really makes little sense to me. Jesus seemed to pop up just to remind us that letting your conscience be your guide, and doing unto others etc...mightwin you a place in heaven, but not before an excruciating and humiliatingly painful life, and death. The most consistently punishable sin seems to be the most human of instincts, and that is to ask "WHY"???? No matter that we have free will and all. Blind faith is the way to go apparently...but where does it get us? But what do I know, I'm no burning bush, after all!

I just finished watching a doco on discovery channel about these kinds of abuse allegations, especialy ones brought about after therapy.
It seems that most shrinks have implanted the scenarios in the victims minds and no physical evidence of the abuse actually exists.
Not to say that it doesnt happen, i know of people who are living with this kind of stuff. But Loads of psychiatrists and psychologists in the US, UK and a few in Australia have been sent to prison for doing this to their paitents, usualy as a way for them to make more money by guaranteeing the paitents come back.... |

Consider this simple fact...we go to psychiatrists to help us unravel the tangled threads that are our minds. What if they decide to weave them back in an alien configuration? Same neurons, different battle.
