Noted for his good looks, Dr James Barry joined the British army as a surgeon in 1816. He rose through the ranks to become the most skilled of physicians and later attained the rank of inspector general. He showed conspicuous gallantry in campaigns and was greatly admired. But the astonishing fact was that Dr James Barry was a woman.
Not so uncommon. A way to get a job, get out of the rank. Many pirates, sailors, soldiers, metal-workers were women. I personally thought they did better than many of the men!
