A former Navy machinist, Prince terrorised San Diego, California, stabbing six women to death and provoking the largest police manhunt in the city's history. His crime spree spanned from 1990 to his capture in 1991 and included numerous burglaries, one rape and six murders. Unlike most serial killers, Prince killed women outside his race. He was linked to several of the deaths by DNA evidence and jewellery in his possession that belonged to his victims. He also gave his girlfriend a rare opal ring for Christmas that belonged to his second victim.
FBI experts were called in by the prosecution to find a common thread in all the killings. The signature that connected all slayings was circles of blood smeared on all the victim's breasts.
Some of the victims were stabbed up to fifty times. Prince bragged to a friend about "doing a mother and her daughter," (his last two victims) and took to wearing the mother's wedding ring on a chain around his neck. Usually Prince stalked and followed the unlucky women to their homes. There he would break in, take a knife from the kitchen and attack the women. In 1993 a jury found Prince guilty of six counts of first-degree murder, 20 counts of burglary and one count of rape.

Actually the signature in the Cleophus Prince "Clairemont' killings, which he claims to be innocent of having committed, is not circles of smeared blood, but rather the extremely rare 'picquerism'.
"The Clairemont killer enjoyed an often unrecognised form of sexual satisfaction called 'picquerism,' which is sexual pleasure gained by stabbing, cutting or slcing of another person. The killer with this particular form of sexual deviation uses secondary mechanisms for satiating his sexualized power needs by penetrating and rendering flesh. That is, the specific focus and intent of picquerism is to instrument power and deviant sexual satisfactions by the process of penetration, be it by cutting, stabbing or biting. The killer finds the bloodletting, odors, and victim screams harmonic and simply supplementary aspects of the primary purpose. The results of this type of crime are particularly gruesome."

The Clairemont killer was a control-type serial killer, and as such his sexual thrill came from control and not actual human contact with the victim. Rarely does such a killer achieve a climax at the scene of the crime, but rather he prefers to wait until he is in a safe place . In this way he achieves not only control over the victim but also over his own orgasm. It is also common for this type of signature killer to take 'souvenirs' from the victim. In the Clairemont case the victims were stabbed numerous times in the left breast, which was then left exposed, and articles of jewellery were taken from the victims.

I have NO idea why anybody would want to write to this sick, evil man. I had the unfortunate circumstance of meeting Cleophus Prince in late 1990 when he approached me as I was leaving a bar at 1:45 am. I have no clue HOW he got there, it was almost as if he appeared from the shadows. What I do know is that, but for the grace of God, I would have been his 8th victim, though whether that would have been murder which he had done 6 times or whether it would have been rape which he supposedly did once, I have NO doubt that he had evil intentions associated with our meeting. It was only the sudden appearance of 100's of bicyclists (yep, at 1:45 in the morning -- I didn't even know until then that San Diego has a midnight bicycle event once a year), that kept me safe from Cleophus Prince. I have no clue why people are interested in supporting these horrible people -- my wish for him would be a life of total solitude with NOONE to contact him. He hurt many families, including mine, with his evil actions. Yes, I was lucky to have NOT become his victim, but the fear that he instilled in me will always remain. The man is trash and should be treated as such!!
