I dont know how the laws are in the other states of Australia, but here in QLD they actually slow people down. Along the Pacific Motorway going thru Logan (HUGE stretch of highway thru industrial areas) there are always speed cameras now...you never no where tho and NOBODY with half a brain speeds thru there coz we all no of people who've been done  Plus going thru the dreamworld Pac Motorway bit down to the Gold Coast, no one speeds thru there coz theres always speed cameras. Plus the Gold Coast crawls with them, especially Friday and Saturday nights (popular time on the coast for anyone with a car wanting to show off coz hundreds of ppl meet at this place called Broadwater Car Park down the coast to show off their wheels, drool over other ppls rides etc)
My verdict - Speed cameras work for the most part.
They still suck tho

Speed cameras, traffic cameras, like the Gatso Gun speed traps you have in the States.
Here in the UK, they just make a lot of money, but are also a quick fix for the Police Crime Detection figures. Each regional force here has targets, like any business. For each month they need to 'solve' a targeted percentage of the crimes reported in their areas. If they're flagging, they go out with speed traps and bust a few hundred motorists who happen to be driving at 35 in a 30 zone, or driving through one of the areas that aren't clearly marked (or with signs hidden by police vans). And... success! Instant crime detection.
Obviously, the police would be better employed chasing criminals, looking for stolen cars, investigating personal attacks and so on, but why bother when your force can have a crime detection rate of 95% just by irritating innocent drivers? And you can make £60 sterling from each person stopped too!

The previous posting made a few good points, but just think....if you have a bunch of police wasting time pulling speeders over, they can't focus on real crime. The cameras are much more efficient time wise. They free up officers to do some real hunting. I dislike speeders. They cause a lot of accidents, and destroy lives. Bitching about that speeding ticket? Slow the fuck down! An automobile is a lethal machine, accidents are a leading cause of death.
