'Ceramics' sold at federal auction in S. Florida turn out to be human skulls

CLEVELAND -- A collection of ceramics sold during a U.S. government auction in South Florida include human skulls, but their origin remains unknown.

Dr. Heather Raaf, chief deputy coroner in Cuyahoga County, said a forensic anthropologist examined the skulls Tuesday and determined they are human. She said each is a partial skull that may at some point have been buried.

``We had an anthropologist look at them and he said they are all definitely human, but they are old. They are not people who recently died. We think they had been buried and somehow unearthed, because they were weathered, and there was some moss and mold on them,'' Raaf said.

She said that in the skull parts observed there is ``no sign of violence or injury.'' The federal government is trying to check records to find out the source of the skulls, said Cherise Miles, a Chicago spokeswoman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Miles said the items were sold Jan. 15 at an auction at the Broward Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale by auctioneering contractor EG&G; Technical Services, which would have inspected and priced the lot identified as ``clay artifacts and assorted items.'' She said the skulls were part of a lot that sold for about $1,000.

Britney Sheehan, a spokeswoman for EG&G; in Miami, said Tuesday the contractor did not know skulls were in the lot. She said the items were provided by U.S. Customs officials.

``In the paperwork they were labeled as gifts,'' she said.

She did not know the origin.

``I'd say it's a 95 percent logical assumption it came from another country,'' she said.

Photos released Tuesday by police in Brook Park, a Cleveland suburb, show at least two skulls and a ceramic head.

The skulls were discovered Friday at a warehouse for Marc's discount stores in the Cleveland area. Warehouse employees called police when a carton of what they thought was holding ceramic figurines revealed bone where one had cracked.

But Raaf said only some of the figurines were intact and some were just skulls.

unless i knew the person who's skull was adorning my bookcase, i don't think i would have a human skullbone in my abode.
there are more than one infamous serial killers who found good use for not only the flesh, but also the teeth, bones, and organs.
could it be that the ultimate perversion, the most carnivorous hunters, are those who practice the ultimate detatchment from what it is to be human....
all realities are the realities created by the minds of the "psycho".
how many find carnage to be decorative?

Well I never thought of myself as Serial Killer material - although I must admit that there are many people out there I would like to see killed and would feel no sorrow for at all. I just don't see human remains as anything but remains .... dross...the human part has gone.

but one mans dross is anothers decor. we sit on leather sofas, feed on flesh...perhaps some skeletal sculpture would make an old design scheme seem fresh?

I like bones, think they are beautiful structures, yet I am not a serial killer. Hey, on Halloween millions put out skeleton decor! The "Day of the Dead," Dio de Los Muertes, they go to the extent of baking bread and cookies in the shapes of human skulls, as respect, and remembrance of the obvious we all will experience....of course it is more complex than that, but you get the idea.

As a sculptor, I study anatomy, and really LIKE the form of skeletons. I am actually sculpting an entire human skeleton of clay now, will make molds of every bone....I doubt this has been done before, but I will be able to cast it in any medium, and do many variations. On my web-site I have a human skull I cast in bronze, the jaw works and the top opens.....and locks with a skeleton key....

Pirates used to take skulls, and carve intricate designs into them, rub coloured inks into the patterns, a form of scrimshaw. Women in Renaissance and Medeival times would keep a skull on their dressing table, as a reminder of the briefness of beauty. I built myself a bookcase formed like a coffin...so if you ask if I would use bones as decor items, the answer is yes. Also tree bones (wood), earth bones (metal), and worm shit (silk).

*I don't shop at Wal-Mart or decor with Chinese plastic*

Jukama.....Wow, you said Dross! How awesome.....as dross and slag are impure by-products of molten metal, foundry work. I have poured literally TONS of molten metal, and the dross if not properly DEALT with can ruin an otherwise perfectly good casting.....or make the repair work a real trauma. Remind you all of anything??????

Apology accepted - I have never been accused of being frilly and feminine anyway.

I freely admit to actually falling asleep in the bathtub sometimes......waking up in 60 degree F water....does naught seem to affect the bubbles, however.......if I don't get back to you, I am enjoying the tub to a lethal degree!
