A baby boy born with three legs and two male organs around the hip in the St Elizabeth Hospital in Lusiksiki is to be flown to the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town on Thursday.
Eastern Cape health MEC Bevan Goqwana said the baby was born to an 18-year-old woman identified only as Tobeka on Thursday. It was her first child.
"It was supposed to be a twin delivery," Goqwana told Sapa. "The baby has one head, and around the hip it has two penises. It also has three legs as well as an undeveloped arm.
"There is also no anus."
Goqwana said the health department would pay for the flight to Cape Town as well as the hospital costs.
The baby will be accompanied by its mother and a doctor on the flight to Cape Town.

Call me a murderer, and I no I'm bound to open a can of worms with this, but....forgive me for having this opinion and not being able to put it any nicer...but I believe babies born with this much wrong with them shouldn't have to suffer throught their lives....they should be terminated. I no its cruel and all, but think how frustrating it is for the kid, the kids parents and society in general. I have nothing against people with disabilities, but with this much wrong with you, your life will be tough, no matter what the medical world can do to relieve it....it will still be tough.

I know that when I have children I will being getting all the tests available to find any deformaties or abnormalties in the baby and this is mainly because I know I am not physically or emotionally able to care for a child that is mentally or physically disabled on a full time basis. With this said I have done volunteer work at disabled childrens camps and have found the children lovely, but a week or two out of my life every year is a lot different than 24 7.

| I think that if the parents did not think that they were able to care for such a child...they could give the baby up for adoption to parents who could care for him 24/7. But I don't think anyone should terminate the baby. |

I disagree Cat - but I'm just looking at the child's quality of life....and with this much wrong with it, it isn't very high. It wont grow up being able to live a normal healthy life, and the chance of further complications is always higher than a normal healthy born bub.

I agree with you Shy, with the medical facilities available today, they can detect problems very early on in the pregnancy, giving you a chance to terminate if they cannot correct the problem before the child is born, which in some cases the can. But for what it's worth to the baby, I would never let my child live a life deprived of anything, including a healthy mind and body. Also, I no emotionally, pysically and mentally, I could not look after it myself, and nor would I expect anyone else to. A baby is your own responsibility, it shouldn't be passed around like a sack of potatoe chips.

| No i do not have any children Shy, and it's not that I disagree with your points it's just....i know the child wouldn't have a very high quality of life. But neither would i if i had to live with the fact that i terminated my child (if i had one). That's all. I agree with you but i don't think i could do that. |

It would be the hardest thing to do. I think I would try to look at it like I was giving it a second chance to incarnate...uno, a second chance to perfect its little body before being born...

Not so long ago, a child with such deformities would not have made it out of a delivery room.
I personally know an elderly lady who was a mid wife in England for many years and am informed that many 'still Born' deliveries were actually quit alive but deformed.
Midwives would actually 'take care' of these poor souls before they suffered an horendous and usually short life.

no one wants to live like that the parents nor the children. im pretty sure that ultrasounds would be able to show you what was wrong with the child so its the parents fault for not terminating it. anyway i wouldnt want that kid. most people who wish to adopt want children that are new born and healthy |

I agree that a child with serious deformities would have problems being adopted by a normal couple. But there are people who get their kicks from the attention they get by taking on such a medically dependant child. The doctors also love it when they get odd things such as the child here. The chance to do a little experimentation helps expand our knowledge on the limits of our bodies and our medicine. Hopefully we will here more about this case. Legs and penises can be removed and anuses have been created. This child will most likely be fine. If I saw this on my ultrasound I would choose termination. bet this girl never had one though. Lia |
