Posted - 11 May 2003 : 09:37:53 BACKPACKER killer Ivan Milat sparked a security scare last month when he deliberately injured his hand in a move prison authorities believe was part of an escape attempt.
Milat, who is serving seven life sentences in Goulburn Jail's high-risk management unit, required 24 stitches to fingers on his left hand after deliberately slamming it in a door. According to prison sources, Milat told authorities he inflicted the self-harm in protest at not being given enough time to use the prison computer. However, prison authorities be lieve it was an attempt to be moved to an off-site hospital from where he could escape. They took a similar view two years ago when Milat swallowed three razor blades, 24 blade staples and a nail-clipper chain.
Milat is serving seven life sentences for the murders of seven young backpackers between September 1992 and November 1993. The high-risk management unit - dubbed Supermax - is the state's toughest jail.
