Officers were alerted by a member of the public who came across a distressed nine-year-old boy in the street.
A 50-year-old man found at the scene was taken to hospital suffering injuries to his wrist. He has been arrested, said a Met Police spokesman.
A post mortem examination carried out at Hornsey Mortuary gave the cause of the toddler's death as severe head injuries.
The nine-year-old boy was also injured and was taken to a north London hospital suffering from neck wounds, which are not believed to be serious.
Officers are awaiting a formal identification of the three-year-old.
