Posted - 18 July 2004 : 2:10:29 PM Hi, I have decided to get an Axylotl (after having fish for ages). I have read up on some info but still need to find out some basics. What size tank needed for one Axy, in length etc? Is plastic better than glass? What do I need to put in the tank in the way of pebbles, plants? Can the tank have a lid (I have cats too)? Do I need a filter and what sort? Do I need an aerator (sp?)? Also the PH etc, any special advice? And feeding advice.
Finally, where would I purchase an Axy? I live in Sunbury (Victoria).
Thanks all. |

Posted - 01 September 2006 : 1:24:49 PM Hey guys
I have an axylotyl and I've recently been having trouble with him. He's about 5 years old (which im guessing is pretty old for a fish) and he's pretty hardy. I used to work in a pet shop and he went blind so I took him because we couldnt sell him. I've never had any trouble with him and I don't have a pump or filters or anything, he's pretty easy to look after.
I used to feed him only every few days because when i fed him every day he would leave his food there. Lately I started feeding him every day and he was eating it all, except he started floating a lot. Then he started eating rocks. they're pretty big rocks in his tank, about 1.5cm and I think he was eating them so he would sink, but now he has trouble getting to the top of the water to breathe.
Any ideas? occassionally he spits a rock back out again, but he is definately still full of rocks!!?! How do i get him to throw em back up again?
ANy ideas would be awesome. |

Posted - 18 July 2004 : 7:25:41 PM Hi,
Incase you haven't seen it already, there is a good Axolotl information site here: http://axolotl.caudata.org
I'm new to Axolotls myself and have been researching a lot in the last week (how long I've been an Axo owner for).
1)What Size Tank is needed? Tank Size is debatable from what I have read/heard. Most people seem to go by the 1 foot per Axolotl rule. I myslef had a 40 (L) by 25 (W) x 28 (H) tank for one Axolotl, who is about 15cm in length at the moment. This was a good size and he seemed very happy but seeing as they can grow up to 30cm long it probably wouldn't last him his whole life.
2) Is Plastic better then glass? No idea. My tank was plastic and glass!
3) What do I need to put in the tank..? You need either very small gravel or very large pebbles. The reason being that the Axo can eat the gravel by accident, so it has to be too big to fit in his mouth or small enough that it's not going to hurt him.
Plants: If you are going to use live plants, remember that they have to be able to thrive in cold water, in dim light. Also, Axox are very powerful swimmers so they have to be hardy. I think a lot of people go for plastic plants. I have had pennywort for the whole week and it seems to be doing fine.
Other: It's nice to give your Axo a hiding spot. Be careful when choosing as many Aqaurium ornaments have sharp edges and Axos have fragile skin. Alternatives include, terracotta pots, coffee mugs and pvc pipe.
4) Can the tank have a lid? If you have cats its probably a good idea to have a lid. Most tanks usually come with lids anyway..
5) Do I need a filter and what sort? Axos are messy so you need a filter if you want less work for yourself. Any sort that is the right size for you tank. Axos don't like strong water flow though so one that can be turned down is good.
7) Also the PH etc?... You need to do all the normal fish tank stuff, conditioning the water etc. Ph should be between 6 - 8 though the common favoutite seems to be between 7 - 7.6
You also need to watch the ammonia levels.. so a testing kit will help with that.
8) Feeding Advice: Axos will eat anything that they can fit in their mouth! You can buy frozen bloodworms, beef heart, live worms, feeder fish, pellets. Meal worms shouldn't be given often because Axox have a problem with the amount of Chitin they contain. Also, if buying live feed.. be creful or parasites.
I'm not sure where you would buy one down there, I am in Brisbane and they have them in almost every pet store/aquarium shop.
