Posted - 04 May 2004 : 7:29:23 PM NEW ORLEANS - Seven cadavers donated to Tulane University’s medical school were sold to the Army and blown up in land mine experiments, officials said Wednesday. Tulane said it has suspended dealings with a national distributor of donated bodies.
Tulane receives up to 150 cadavers a year from donors but needs only between 40 and 45 for classes, said Mary Bitner Anderson, co-director of the Tulane School of Medicine’s Willed Body Program. The university paid National Anatomical Service, a New York-based company that distributes bodies nationwide, less than $1,000 a body to deliver surplus cadavers, thinking they were going to medical schools in need of corpses.
High markup
The anatomical services company sold seven cadavers to the Army for between $25,000 and $30,000, said Chuck Dasey, a spokesman for the Army’s Medical Research and Materiel Command in Fort Detrick, Md. The bodies were blown up in tests on protective footwear against land mines at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio.
Tulane said it found out about the Army’s use of the bodies in January 2003. It suspended its contract with the anatomical services company this month. The company did not immediately return calls for comment.
“There is a legitimate need for medical research and cadavers are one of the models that help medical researchers find out valuable information,” Dasey said. “Our position is that it is a regulated process. Obviously it makes some people uncomfortable.” Cadaver remains are routinely cremated, he added.
Military use is common
For years military researchers have bought cadavers to use in research involving explosive devices. In the last five years, that research has been used to help determine safe standoff distances, on how to build the best shelters, and to improve helmets, Dasey said. Michael Meyer, a philosophy professor at Santa Clara University in California who has written about the ethics of donated bodies, said the military’s use is questionable because it knows donors did not expect to end up in land mine tests.
“Imagine if your mother had said all her life that she wanted her body to be used for science, and then her body was used to test land mines. I think that is disturbing, and I think there are some moral problems with deception here,” Meyers said.
The market in bodies and body parts is under scrutiny after two men, including the head of the Willed Body Program at the University of California at Los Angeles, were arrested for trafficking in stolen body parts.

Posted - 08 September 2005 : 4:24:40 PM I read something somewhere about the owner of a crematorium selling the bodies he received to the government for just this purpose & putting god-knows-what in place of ashes....anyone else remember that?

Posted - 05 June 2004 : 06:52:42 AM The grass is always greener... Human Beings have subjected themselves to each and every torment, trial, and pleasure imaginable. While I work dilligetly to understand the method in this madness, it all leads back where it began. I wouldn't mind if my corpse were shredded to bits by a huge bomb. I do insist however that I am good and dead. Wouldn't want to be the one that slipped through the net. Whatever. People do stranger things to themselves and eachother while they live and breathe. Right under all our noses. There are more pressing issues than sanitation.

Posted - 30 May 2004 : 3:12:18 PM War is not really my style, but i must admire the detatchment of scientists and polititians when they treat human beings as lab rats. It is this dehumanization which allows world powers to forget about the "people", in the quest for power. This occurs everyday, in hospitals, prisons, jail cells, and military ranks. Televison feeds us everything but the truth, church roofs fall in on a childrens choir, sex and death now go hand in hand. How could it surprize everyone so much that unimaginable atrocity accurs on a regular basis. A few cadavers falling prey to explosives is nothing...what about the living victims who are poisoned slowly everyday? What of the children who never knew anything more than depravity? Who is to blame when the monster we crete turns to devour us? We have a witch hunt, we jump from fear and squash the very thing we made. God must have a pencil with a neverending eraser. Wind us up, watch us go. Toy soldiers marching to an evil drummer.

Posted - 30 May 2004 : 2:47:32 PM Almost all soldiers wish to go home, whether alive or dead. On this Memorial Day, I am thinking of nearly 800 U.S. soldiers dead, $200 BILLION expended by the U.S. alone, naught to mention our allies lives and dollars, the massive cancer and diseases, birth defects which are going to occur on a huge scale, and joint chiefs chairman General Richard Myers told senators that while there is no way the U.S. can loose militarily in Iraq, "there's also no way to militarily win." Think about THAT statement. Perhaps he should have paid more attention to McArthur, "never fight a war on the Asian land mass." I am half expecting Barry Sadler to leap up and lead a protest march on Capitol Hill, and stuff his green beret down someone's throat, but few can afford to GO there now that gasoline costs $2.10 a gallon....... I am continually amazed that so few learn nothing from history. Johnny came limping home, and healed, even though the V.A. hospital cut him off......

Posted - 25 May 2004 : 3:16:56 PM I am so inhumane sometimes...I laughed when I read the title of this thread
I don't really think this is such a bad idea. The idea of blowing up a corpse is disturbing, but it's for protection of our men who risk their own LIVING BREATHING bodies so we can all go on with life in a somewhat "normal" way. It sounds harsh and horrible, and I agree with Mazeppa, 25-30K for a dead man - WTF?!?!?! When you're dead, there aint a lot that can be done about it. You can float round the world or lie in a box. haha, wow. And really, if donating your body to the army so they blow you up to help determine safety issues regarding land mines, how is that different to subjecting your body organs to science? I will be an organ donar, tho I dont think my lungs will really be worth hanging onto, lol, and if my kidneys save some dude, sweet. Good for him. If he doesnt mind have chic bits, literally LOL.
Thumbs up to donating your body to science.
Hehehe, kinkyness.......
