Saw an interesting doco on Australia's SBS about 2am last Sunday night.

It was about the serial killer Herb Baumeister. Herb was a seemingly quiet family man who actually led a secret double life luring gay men back to his large estate when his wife and son where away on summer holidays. Into auto-erotic asphixyation, investigators believe after a night of experimentation which may have gone to far resulting in the death of a partner Herb developed a deeper fixation on the process therefore killing around 20 men.

The documentary was very interesting and included an extensive interview with his former wife who did not have any idea of her husband's gruesome secret - even though there were 10 or more bodies in the woods not 20 metres from their back door !

I'd love to read comments about it. "A plea, for pastoral plains and sunny fields, for eagles and zeal, for brave-hearted quiddity, for the gleefulness and mirth of the lanterns, and the fundamental pillars of life."

I'm from Indianapolis originally and was a big ol' gay bar boy during the years when this was happening. Herb Baumeister's filthy work kept the entire Indy gay community on edge. Like we didn't have AIDS for that during the 80s and 90s!
I worked in the bar where they shot the interview with "Dogg" who was Roger Alan Goodlet's lover. I set up the lighting for the interview! But that's neither here nor there.
That MF killed three of my friends. Roger, who was called Alan, another friend named Alan (weird I know) and my buddy Jerry whose body was so destroyed he's never been identified. Just like most of the 9/11 victims!!
I hope he's rotting in hell.
There are no more words. Except!!!!!
If his wife hadn't been SUCH a soul-dead HOOSIER some of those guys would CERTAINLY be alive today.

I actually underwent a polygraph test as part of a job application process, and while waiting in the lobby of the office where I was to take the test, I noticed a paperback book written on the subject of Herb Baumeister. When I went in to take the polygraph, the man administering it had the same name as one of the authors of the book so I asked if he was the same person who wrote the book, which he was. We began to talk a little about the case and his involvement, and it turns out he was hired by one of the missing men's family to try and locate him. In the process of his investigation, he began to uncover clues about Baumeister and eventually it all led up to the story as we now know it. The detective is a retired Indianapolis Police Dept. officer and had some other interesting stories to tell about other crimes. He even showed me a collection of various weapons that criminals used against him in the course of him making arrests. Sorry it's only taken a year to respond!

I believe they were called Discount City or something like that. They were a closeout/discount chain of stores.

I got to meet and talk with the detective that solved this murder today. He is an extremely interesting man with a lot of incredible stories to tell.

Herb Baumeister was the embodiment of the American dream. He built from scratch a chain of successful local thrift stores in Indianapolis and led a seemingly normal life as a husband and a devoted father of three. However, when police uncovered the remains of seven young gay men in the woods of Fox Hollow Farm -- the family's $1 million estate in the exclusive Indianapolis suburb of Westfield -- Baumeister's American dream was more like a murderous nightmare.

In fact, Baumeister's wife of 20 years -- Julie -- had no idea of what Baumeister was all about. Every summer, while she and the kids went to Baumeister's mother's lakeside condo, he stayed behind "to work." A big fan of autoerotic asphyxia, Baumeister is suspected in as many as a dozen unsolved gay murders along the Indiana Interstate, and another dozen young gay men killed in Ohio and Indiana.

In June, 1996, while Baumeister was at the condo, officers found hundreds of bones -- adding up to the remains of seven people -- in the woods behind his estate. All the victims frequented the same bars that Baumeister did, and all went missing on days when his wife and kids were away. Not one to face the music, Baumeister took off to Canada where he committed suicide

For Julie Baumeister the shock was monstrous. The man she thought was a hard-working and devoted father -- the man she shared her bed with for 20 years -- was clearly one of Indiana's most prolific serial killers.

In May 1993 gay men began disappearing to the tune of 10 over two years. Police scoured gay Indianapolis for clues. In the fall of 1994, a man told them of a strange tryst he had with someone named Brian: They had gone to Brian's sprawling estate and engaged in autoerotic asphyxiation. A year later the man spotted Brian again and, aware of the rash of disappearances, took down his license-plate number. As it turned out, Brian was Baumeister.

November of that year -- though lacking sufficient evidence for a search warrant -- detectives showed up at Fox Hollow Farm asking to search the estate. When Baumeister refused, they went to work on Julie. They told her about Baumeister's cruising and that they suspected him of being a serial killer. She refused to believe them. "The police came to me and said, 'We are investigating your husband in relation to homosexual homicide. I remember saying to them, 'Can you tell me what homosexual homicide is?'"

Five months later they approached her again. Remembering a skull and a cluster of bones her 13-year-old son had found in the woods outside the house which her husband casually dismissed as an old skeleton his father kept, she became more suspicious of her now estranged husband. Finally, with Baumeister gone for some R & R at the lakeside condo, she allowed police to inspect the property. As the search began, the 49-year-old Baumeister disappeared. Eight days later, on July 3, 1996, campers discovered his body lying beside his car in Ontario's Pinery Provincial Park, with a bullet hole from the business end of a .357 Magnum in his forehead.

On April 28, 1998, investigators concluded that Baumeister probably killed 16 men in all after linking him to nine other men whose bodies were found dumped along rural roads in Indiana and Ohio between 1980 and 1990.
