In 1994, the arrest of a seemingly ordinary Gloucester couple living in a seemly ordinary Gloucester terraced house sparked off a series of extraordinary - and horrifying - revelations. A couple whose quest for sexual excitement drove them to multiple murder.

Posted - 22 June 2004 : 02:39:20 AM You're obviously as entitled to your view as anyone else, but please try to base your view on proven fact rather than assumption.
We'll never know exactly what happened. Rosemary West was not an innocent in all of this, and has not pretended to be.
How do you know that the victims were kept in the cellar for weeks before meeting their deaths? I've never heard that before. As for the 'smell of rotting corpses being hard to miss', that holds no water as an arguement. At the time of the murders, there were an awful lot of people living at 25 Cromwell Street. Lodgers came and went daily. Some stayed 1 night, some stayed a year. On average, 8 lodgers were staying at any particular time, as well as the West children. If none of them noticed anything, why should Rosemary West have known? Fred West also used to send Rose out of the house for nights at a time, to sleep with his friends, business aquaintances or people he met.
My point was that nothing is black and white, and nothing is actually as it gets reported. Rosemary West was very cruel and abusive to a lot of people, including her own children. She was vicious and sadistic and deserved to go to prison for what she did to Anne-Marie West and many others. She admits this herself. What she didn't deserve though, was to have the entire blame laid on her as Fred West had opted out by killing himself. Personally, I don't believe(and never have) believed that she was involved in the murders. I think that she lived a very dark life. Her father was abusive and cruel and from him, she fled into the arms of someone much worse.
I don't believe that she was as guilty as Fred West or deserves the amount of blame that she gets. Her circumstances led her to behave as she did although her circumstances are no excuse. She did what she did and deserved to be punished for it. And she is being punished.
You are of course entitled to your point of view, but base it on something. Don't just read tabloid reports and surmise.

Posted - 22 June 2004 : 01:31:47 AM Hello,
I'd just like to say what we're forgetting is that this couple were people that other people trusted. They let others believe that they were a 'normal, happily' married couple, and that young girls trusted them. How did Fred and Rose repay them? By doing what they did.
I also think that there is no way Rose would have not known about the murders, seeing as helpless victims were left in the cellar for weeks until meeting their deaths. Also I think the smell of rotting corpses would be quite hard to miss.
Whether Rose was apart of these murders could be argued, however there is no way she would have had no idea what was going on and therefore she is as guilty as fred. I'm sure if these victims have lived, the abuse they suffered from the pair of them would have been unbearable to live with, take Anne-Marie for example, the poor lady has tried to kill herself a couple of times from the trauma she has suffered.
The best place for Rose West is behind bars! |

Posted - 28 May 2004 : 03:45:52 AM hello again dee,
i totally agree that one must remain open and i pay little regard to tabloids. all of us are guilty if subject to trial by media.
i assumed you had some kind of connection with Rose. i've always been interested in corresponding with such like but am actually considering it now. unfortunately, one of the people i'd like to hear from is Ian Brady - hence, i don't expect an answer!
regarding abuse, one can only imagine the horror. |

Posted - 28 May 2004 : 02:57:11 AM Hi K.M.S.
Like I said, she's far from the person the media would have you think. Your father will have told you then that she protests her innocence and always will. I was sceptical, but open minded. When the case first came out, I figured she was guilty. But then when she went to trial, and I followed the evidence, I felt that it was very wrong.
Two years ago, I got to know Rosemary West personally and we corresponded and spoke very regularly for a long time. Through our phone conversations and letters and all that she told me, I think I gained a small insight into the life she led, and the life that led her to where she is now. I am personally convinced that she was not involved in the murders. Fred West was a sexual sadist, totally controlling and frightened of nothing and nobody. He was an abuser of everyone he came into contact with and to start to understand her situation, you'd need to understand what it would be like to live with someone like that. How it might cause a person to develop and react, and for what reasons.
Nothing is black & white.

Posted - 28 May 2004 : 02:27:16 AM howdies dee,
i have to admit i'm lacking information regarding these two and never paid much interest. although, it's a bit of a long-shot that she raped kids with fred etc but never knew of their murders.
that said, i gratefully don't have to rely on the media for info about her - my father was a governor at one of her prisons. |

Posted - 27 May 2004 : 6:44:09 PM Hi
It's a totally different case. That Charmaine West died while Fred was in prison was no proven conclusively. They guessed this, based on photographs and dental records. Rosemary West was convicted on similar fact evidence, based on assaults for which she'd previously been convicted - similar apart from the victims of those assaults (or assault in fact), were not murdered.
In so far as her knowing nothing about 12 murders, you need to understand something of the life she lived and the house in which she lived.
With Myra Hindley, there was direct evidence linking her to at least one murder. With Rosemary West, that was not the case. She was vilefied by the media in the UK and carried the blame for all the murders in the absence of the person that actually was responsible.
Rosemary West is far from the person the media would have you think. |

Posted - 27 May 2004 : 12:33:01 PM i agree that they would never be able to receive a fair trial, just like Ian Brady, Peter Sutcliffe and Dennis Neilson before them.
but, erm, when Charmaine was murdered in 1971 Fred was actually in prison...
regardless, she knew nothing about 12 murders? she's as innocent as Myra Hindley then... |

Posted - 26 May 2004 : 11:19:48 PM This is a classic case of things not always being what they seem, and a typical trial by media. Had Fred West not hung himself in Prison, he would have been found guilty of the murders, quite rightly. As he died, his wife Rosemary was left to carry full responsibility. There was no way that the world media would allow her a fair trial. While she was cruel, unkind and brutal in her treatment of many, including her own children, she was not involved in murder.
