Posted - 20 May 2004 : 1:26:06 PM The rules of duelling: I have to divinate this from memory, but is quite close in word/intent. To preface, duelling has quite a long history, the basis regards honour, code of conduct, and is quite a long and interesting topic. Often if a gentleman's conduct was questioned, long letters were exchanged between the twain, an apology requested, perhaps given, perhaps naught. Negotiations of many sorts could be hidden in such correspon-dance, and many hidden desires and between the lines association diserned. Land bargains, love of a woman, silly offence where none was intended, jelousy, intemperate leanings, family squabble, all this and more are exhibited in the classic duel. The classic rules of duelling were drawn up and settled at Clonmel Summer Assizes, 1777, by gentleman delegates of various Irish townships. Followed similarly in England, and upon the continent, and also in America, overall the rules were followed with extreme deviations according to the situations and obteneberations felt. Some duelists were quite polite, simply discharghing their pistol wildly at the sky, figuring the matter settled and time for a drink with his opponent at the local pub, laughter ensues, all settled, the whole town is happy. Others were blood fests with lethal intent, cheating rules, even seconds engaging in most ungentlemanly conduct. Sometimes one of the pistol duellers would fire his three second shot in the air, his opponent would take 5 seconds to carefully aim and kill. The sword duels were also most interesting, sometimes resolved with the drawing of first blood, sometimes to the death. Some combatted with sword as a dance, like a tango, not meaning to kill, merely a resolution process. Some awaited the chance to slash their opponent and did so with extreme attitude. I am remitting codo duello for your pleasure, may naught be TOTALLY accurate but I must submit these rules from memory. And there is a lot driving this out right now, but here we go::
Rule 1: The first offense requires the first apology, though the retort may hast been more offensive than the insult. ex: A tells B he is northwith a defender of Ladies honour, and B tells A of a beating unjust of his wife on X occasion. Such retort may increase the desire for killing.
Rule 2: If the parties would rather fight on, then after two shots apiece (but in no case before) B may explain his obteneberation forst and A apologise afterward.
(The above rules apply to all cases of offenses in RETORT not of stronger class than the previous example.)
Rule 3: If they can't fucking figure out who gave first offense after the first shots, read no one got HIT, common with such pistols as they used, the decision rests with the seconds, or the challenger, if he should so desire it. Usually, by this time, it is time to hit the pub and suck down several litres of Guiness Stout. But some assholes just don't know when to quit........
Rule 4: When the lie direct is the first offense, the agressor must either beg pardon in express terms; X-change two shots previous to apology; or three shots followed up by X-planation; or fire until a severe hit be received by one party or another.
Rule 5: As a blow is stricktly prohibited under any circumstance among gentleman, no verbal apology can be received for such an insult. The alternatives, fot gods sake, the offender handing a cANE TO THE INJURED PARTY, TO BE USED UPON HIS OWN BACK, AT THE SAME TIME BEGGING PARDON, firing on until one or the other are disabled, or exchanging three shots, and then asking pardon without profferng the cane. This shit really occured, trust me on this one. Honour used to be taken seriously. I pity you young welps, yet to a degree envy thine. OK, back to topic
(If swords are used, the parties engage 'till one is well blooded, disabled, or disarmed, or until, after bleeding sufficiently, the agressor begs pardon.)
Rule 7: Don't bore your audience, I skip a-head. No apologies can be given nor received, after entering the field of honour, without taking fire.
Rule 10: ANY insult to a LADY under a GENTLEMAN'S care or protection to be considered as,by one degree,a greater offense than if given to the gentleman personally, and to be regarded as such. If you insult a LADY, you triply insult the man she is with. I adhere to this one.......
Rule 12: (a personal favourite) In simple, unpremeditated recontres with the smallsword,or couteau de chasse, the rule is-- first draw, first sheath, unless blood is drawn; then both sheath, and proceed to investigation.
I am half way through 25 rules. I would prefer to dissert personally, or at least weith a quill. May dissert the rest if any interest upon this topic. Seems to me it is still quite relevant, nor matter how twistedly they work with it now a daze.

13****% No dumb shooting or firing in the air is to be permissable. The challenger is is naught to have challenged without receiving offense, and the challenged ought, if he gave offense, to have made an apology before he came upon the ground therefore children's play must be dis-honourable on one side or the other, and is accordingly prohibited.*
14--Seconds to be of equal rank in society with the principal they attend, in-as-murch as a second may choose nor chance to become a principal, and equality is there-fore indispensible.*))))))(((((
15 & Challenges are NEVER to be be-spoken at night, un-less the party to be chall-enged in-tend leaving the the place of off-ence be-fore mour-ning, far it is de-sire-able to a-void all hot-headed pro-ceedings.
16$$ The cha=lenged has the right to chose his own wea-pon, un-less the chall-en-ger gives his honour he is no swords-man, after witch, how-ever, he can de-cline any second species of we-a-pon pro-posed by the chal-lenger.
17))) The chal-lenged cho-ses his ground, the chal-lenger choses his dist-ance, the seconds fix the tyme and terms of fi-ring.
18&&The; se-conds load in presence of one an-other, un-less they give their mu-tual honours they have charged smooth and single, witch should be held suf-ficient.
19--Fi-ring may be reg-u-lated, 1st by sig-nal 2ndly by word of com-mand, or 3rdly , at plea-sure, as may be ag-ree-able to the par-ties. In the latter cas, the par-ties may fire at their rea-son-able le-a-sure, but second pre-sents and rests are strick-tly pro-hib-ited.

Posted - 30 May 2004 : 4:31:27 PM To challenge to enter a duel nowadays is tantamount to murder. Therefore, I will post the remaining rules shortly, as murder has its' own laws. You see, we have liars I mean lawyers to settle disputes now......God is a bullet.
