Criminals do not always leave a convenient fingerprint at the scene of a crime. So forensic scientists also look for other evidence which will help them trace the criminal. One method is to study fragments of evidence from the scene, and try to match them with something belonging to a suspect. For example, a tiny fibre of cloth could be matched to clothes found at the suspects house, or a bullet could be matched to a gun found with a suspects fingerprints on it. To make these matches, scientists have to examine the evidence under a microscope in a forensic laboratory.
