Posted - 15 May 2004 : 8:12:26 PM My tankis quite deep and i cannot fit an arm in there without dismantling the etire tank hood. (VA380 setup)
even iif i could, Barnaby is afraid of hands and wouldnt eat from it anyhoo.
So i'm considering feeding tongs, but i cant seem to find the right type.
would planting tongs/tweezers work? they might well be long enough too.
i dont like the idea of skewers as the ones i have splinter quite badly, and besides, you can skewer blackworms! *lol*
Any ideas?
Here is the tank in case you need a visual. It has been remodelled to include large java ferns and i am still on the lookout for a black glass monolith and a slate feeding platform... but its coming along well.

Posted - 25 May 2004 : 12:37:48 AM my tetra neons live in cold water
the axy tanks sit around 12 deg and the tetras i have in storage live in about the same temp water and some have been in there for over 4 months
tetras love warm water but still thrive in cold they just dont breed in cold water
as for guppies just buy a couple and breed them in a 2 small tanks (1 tank for fry and 1 for growen up ones) then you have a fresh supply all the time .....
if you have the room that is my guppys breed about every 3 months so i have heaps for my axy's
here is a guide if you would like to start
for large scale: http://www.theaquarians.net/ArticlesandWallpapers/guppy_breedingfor_extperts.htm
for small stock: http://home.clara.net/xenotoca/gbreed.htm

Posted - 24 May 2004 : 02:29:30 AM Mine tried to take a wayward fighting fish that snuck in, but dispite many gulps, it wouldnt go down.
Lucky too, it was my best male! i tickled her belly til she spat it up. Fish is fine. Axie was very put out.
I'm considering killies/medakas or pacific blue eyes, partially because of all the topspace in my tank (mortality of fish will be low i think) and partially because i am bored to death with white clouds. Nice fish, good instinct, a bit ho-hum.
neons would get ill and die before they wre caught as my tank is quite cold (way below what neons like) and guppies are pretty expensive around here, and those that arent are sickly.
I'll let you know which way i go with that, and how it works out.
(if it doesnt work out, i have an excuse for a new tank!) |

Posted - 20 May 2004 : 12:01:27 AM i have never seen any damage to my axy's or there feathers (gills)
if i put 20 guppies and 10 tetra neons they are alllll gone in less than 2hours
but the tetra's are the best ones as they are small and Dumb

and they are cheap to buy .... i get 50 for $20
i also use guppys because they are easy to bread
my axy's have also eaten black moores and comets aswell

Posted - 19 May 2004 : 10:41:34 PM Spawn, do you find that your 'fish food' ever attacks the gills of your axies?
I mean, i'd like to have them as opportunistic food, but i am wary as i have heard that guppies in particular are very interested in gills!
I have had white clouds in with B, they were fine, and never approached him/her, but in saying that, they were useless as live food. |

Posted - 18 May 2004 : 10:43:30 PM My Axy's are always climbing up the Elodia to get to the "FOOD GOD" when its feeding time and they also lie in wait on the elodia for the live food to swim past .....
Hey shy did ya read my reply to your question

Posted - 18 May 2004 : 5:45:40 PM I am planning some climby items for the tank, so hopefully that will help.

Posted - 18 May 2004 : 01:10:19 AM Have you tried putting stuff in the tank so they can climb up?
I know in the Tank of Death (though it is much shallower than what yours appears to be) at feeding time, if the axy's don't feel they are getting enough, they will climb up on the pirate ship or the tree stump to get closer to the Food God (the hand).

Posted - 16 May 2004 : 1:09:26 PM He/she is getting more relaxed, but that still leaves the problem of dismantling the hood.
could you keep an eye out for something suitable in your pet store travels and let me know if you find something?
For now they are woofing down pellets at an alarming rate, so they arent going to starve ;) but i'd love to get them some wormies. |

Posted - 16 May 2004 : 12:01:42 AM I find when we get a new Axolotl at first they are scared of my hand but soon become acustom to it once they realise the hand means food.
Our latest aquisition, Edmund, wouldn't come anywhere near the hand for 2-3 weeks until he worked out what he hand was all about - now he chases it around the tank !
