OK, whilst pondering the statement I previously made, I failed to take in the point of Euthenasia. I am a firm beliver in euthenasia. If you have a wasting disease, are born a vegetable or basically have a serious illness robbing you of the simple daily pleasures of tasting, touching, feeling, seeing, feeding yourself, dressing yourself, going to the toilet unaided etc...I believe you should have the right to end your life. To me, your life has already been ended, because you are not functioning in the proper manner; you are suffering. So you should be allowed to bail (Robert FYI = euthenasia is banned over here) But, if you end your life because you're too slack to make it work, or want attention, or want to make others suffer - THEN you have cut your OWN life short and therefore will not rest because your life was not carried out in full. Hmmm, I guess I do belive in fate then..........
Yeah I do. I dont think everything happens for a reason, but I do believe we are here to live out the givfen years we will have, providing we do not end that life sentence short. Does that clear anything up Robert or should we continue this post in the Philosophy section and should I have a few drinks, roll up some cigarettes and get Philosophical?

You wanna get all philosophical... well lets go Jaz...

Firstly let me talk about this Euthenasia thing. Its 'banned' here Jaz for the simple fact that taking ones own life is one thing, but when doctors and other people are given a free slather at also performing Euthenasia it would then become a defence for murder right up there with temporary insanity and insanity. 'I killed her cause she wanted me to...'. Which is a pretty big loop hole for people with bad intentions.

Also did you know that it is also illegal in Australia to let someone assault you. Though this law seems stupid, cause nobody that was sane would allow themselves to be assaulted, but without this law, as with Euthenasia, we are allow wife-beaters to get away with it by saying 'She lets me hit her'.

And as Robert pointed out, it isn't really a law that they can enforce. Attempted suicide is punishable (depending on the degree and seriousness) by either consultation with appropriate doctors or a stay in a hospital. Where as if you succeed it goes unpunished.

Also if you are being 'robbed robbing you of the simple daily pleasures of tasting, touching, feeling, seeing, feeding yourself, dressing yourself' how would you be capable of making a decision as huge as ending your life? Or are you suggesting someone else should make it for you?

On to suicide... I believe there are many other reasons other than 'because you're too slack to make it work, or want attention, or want to make others suffer' for committing suicide. People who are well adjusted and have good coping mechanisms usually respond to suicide the way you have Jaz, but unfortunately not all of us have good support networks (ie: family or friends), we all do not have good ethic upbringings or backgrounds, education levels or even the same financial status. I hear alot of people bitch and moan about there lives who come off as being ungrateful for the simple things they do have - loving family, supportive friends, a good job, a good education - though I also agree with you that some people do commit suicide for the reasons you list.

You go on to say that you believe in fate and that if you commit suicide that you are cutting your life short. What's to say that for those people who commit suicide that they are reaching their fate? Don't you think some people are destined to commit suicide? -- I don't think we understand or know enough about fate and destiny to believe we are intelligent enough to question whether suicides are cutting their life short or following their life plan.

You had better get a few drinks and roll up some cigarettes girlie, I think we are gonna be here for a while

I have no problem with someone choosing to leave the game - after all that is the only real decision we can make in this life, to choose not to play anymore.
Just don't do it indoors and ruin the carpet.

Well then.
When you two have finished planning my little escapade to Robert's overseas residence, feel free to let me no!

Might I also request air-mail...3 weeks at sea in a little cardboard box is gonna make it awfully hard to smoke...I can deal with a day via overnight air-frieght tho, without a cigarette

Ur above spiel Shy has given me much to think about.
I have so many ideas about life, death, suicide, the afterlife, reincarnation, euthenasia etc, however, after reading what you've written I do believe I am quite without enough Life Experience to make up mind on what it is that I actually "Believe to be the truth in my mind"

However.
Suicide, a most taboo topic which I think should be discussed more freely.
I think suicide is the cheats way out.
I agree not all of us come from such a supportive network, but there also networks out there waiting to be the support you need. And I know myself it is often far easier to bitch to someone you don't no, as opposed to a friend or a family member.
But Im one of those horribly annoying people who believe life is a gift...tho sometimes I do question this "gift" myself when is going totally downhill at lightning speed, but I think that to end your life is to cut it short.
The lady who coached my sisters softbnall team when she was in year 7 lost her husband to suicide. She told my mum about it one day. Its a terribly tragic story.
Her and her hubby were happily married with two kids. The kids were doing great in school, their marriage was perfectly happy and blissful...they regularly went on family holidays, outings etc. Karen described her hubby as being an old school gentleman. And a sincere one at that. As far as she knew, all was well with at work alos...he had a high respecting job, was well liked etc. Then Christmas Eve a few years ago, she and the kids came home one night to find him hanging from the ceiling fan with a rope around his neck...all the doors were locked, no sign of forced entry, and no note, not nothing. Just his lifeless form hanging from the fan, slowly spining round the room. The dead givewaway of the suicide was a footstool underneath the fan, tipped over.
You tell me that was fate...that was "his time to go". I do not and cannot believe for one moment his calling was to kill himself.
Karen even had a full investigation done into his work background and turned up no mistresses/other children/embezzaling/fraud, nothing. He was clean.
He was just dead by his own hand.
To me that is cutting your life short. Whatever his reasons, it just seemed that he did not even try to resolve them...he just took the easy road, which so mnay people do with suicide when "all is lost".
I no often "all" does seem lost...but it only remains lost if you choose to let it remain so.
People who suffer from heavy clinical depression piss me off as well. I spent two years on drugs for depression, and in counselling and to this day I believe I came out sunny side up in the end because I chose not to let i ruin my life. I chose to let the counsellor help me come to terms with everything, realise it wasnt my fault, and help me move on. And I did. But there are so many people I hear of thru friends, or by reading website journals that just refuse all help and run the world down saying that its all everyone elses fault their so fucked up, when more to the point, its them just refusing to deal with life. Sometimes friends and family can really piss you off and make your life miserable but bullshit reasons and yeah all would seem lost then. But their are people who are trained and spend years studying ways to help you undertand that your life isnt a waste, your life isnt bullshit, you DO have reasons to live so get on with it.
I think suicide is the cheats way out. Ive looked at it from all angles and to me, it just seems your cheating yourself.

Euthenasia is also another of those relly taboo subjects that cause so much unnecessary arguing.
I find myself having trouble being able to fully justify why I support Euthenasia seeing as tho I'm totally against suicide, but I'll try anyway.
To me, life is precious. Life should not be thrown away and wasted just because "nothing is going your way". It often seems that way, but there are ways to deal with everything that happens; its called Time and a good frame of mind.
But what happens when you cant live your life?
Your in a car accident and suffer severe brain damage that renders you immobilised for life and shuts that vital part fo the brain down that controls everything you do; feeding yourself, bathing yourself, controlling bodily functions, just living in general. What happens when you suddenyl cant do that anymore. Theat everyone around you is by your side 24/7, doing everything for you. What happens when your brain shuts down all functions except breathing, and you're deemed a breathing vegetable. Is that living? Your motor skills are gone, the ability to think is gone, everything is gone. What happens when you become a shell that breathes. Should you HAVE to continue to live?
If that were to happen to me, and my friends and family are aware of this to, I would want to be terminated. If my brain shut down and I became a vegetable (Im sorry Im not a medical wizz and dont no the technical terms for this stuff) I would rather die than live out the remainder of my life. To me that isnt living. That was a fluke unforseen accident that cut my life short, without my help in doing so. And now I can no longer function so why bother. I will never get better. Medical science isnt that far advanced. They will never re-awaken me, I am dead but still breathing. I do not ever want that to happen to me, which is why I support Euthenasia. And I dont think it should be up the individual person to decide "Ok, terminate me now, thanks." We all tick on our licence (aussie ppl do anyway) whether we want to: Yes donate our organs, No keep our organs, or be undecided. Why isnt there one for Euthenasia in case a car accidnet renders you a vegetable?
Ive become so wrapped up in trying to jusify my reasoning here Ive lost my train of thort lol.
Anyway, I will continue this once I regain that train of thought...last seen heading to Surfers Paradise on the GOld Coast at 110KPH (to the beach)

I disagree with suicide being the "only way to deal with things", however I support Euthenasia for those where their life is all but already terminated due to unfair life experience, and now have zero quality of life.

With all the medical hoo-hars available these days, they can tell from very early on in a pregnancy how your baby is doing...my personal opinion is, if your baby is goint to be severly deformed or retarded or has a serious illness that WILL effect its growing life, I dont think it should be born.
ANd I dont mean this should apply to babies who are say deaf or blind, or have downs syndrome or will develope diabetes, I mean serious life threatening, illnesses or deformities. Being born with 3 legs, 4 arms, 6 ears and what have you, and having to be operated on at such a young age will most likely kill it anyway....either that or leave it with long term problems that will effect its life. (I wish I knew all the medicall mumbo-jumbo for this, it'd make it so much easier.)
I dont think a baby with that many deformities should have to be born. It isnt murder to terminate it. Isnt birthing it, then operating on it with a survival rate of say 10-90 (is that right???. I meant the lowest possible rate) just as much murder, than terminting it before its born?
To me it is.
If it were my baby, I wouldnt want it to be born. I realise its easier said than done....but I know I would think of the childs quality of life. To me that is more important. And with that much at risk, even if the operation was successful, the quality oflife woudlnt be that great for the child...there would be long term effects and problems. And then I would feel it WAS all my fault when my child was 13 and committed suicide because it hatee living and being such a freak. I would be the guilty one for lettin git be born and living such a poor quality of life.

Ok, lost the train again.
I realise many of you will pick this to pieces and probably disagree with everything I've said; but this comes from my 19 years on earth, having had the experiences Ive had, this is what I've formed in my mind. In 10 years time it'll probably change...........

Euthanasia is something people have no problem doing to any living thing except their own kind. As for humans doing it to humans, I say it should be allowed. If you can make a Living Will that states your choice of death over living and the circumstances that surround the time this choice is to be made and so on. (You would probably have to have a good lawyer that is extremely knowledgeable in the medical field) Then the right to end your life should be yours. I mean in a Living Will you have the right to refuse treatment, no resuscitation, and feeding tubes…Starvation, what a fast and humane way to die. And the doctor who carries out your directives should in no way be criticized for giving quality in death as he would give quality of life.
Suicide and those who attempt it, I think the majorities that fail are not truly sincere in the attempt. And it is a way of reaching out for help or finding something more painful (be it physical or mental) that makes the pain they are experiencing seem less. Lets face it, everyone knows how to kill themselves with 100% success and what techniques are more ‘maybe it will and maybe it won’t work’. For those who take the 100% way, then who out there should have the right to criticize them. It is obvious that the price they decided to pay was worth the escape, to them, of their personal pain. What pisses people off is usually the pain they feel from the loss of this person and disruption of their lives. Possibly the guilt or helplessness they may feel that they didn’t or couldn’t help prevent the loss of life.

IceHeart,

suicide can't be generalized as broadly as 'the cheat's way out' because there are just too many circumstances for suicide to be a warrantable reprieve. think about it, why would YOU want to kill yourself?

every person has a different perception of what life, family, friends and society mean to them. what their own bodies and minds mean to them are also clearly defined to most individuals. i feel that if a rational individual has made a decision where his life is not worth living (worth with respect to his/her values, not your's or the rest of society's) he does have the right to kill himself. it's his life, and it's his body. it's not your's and it's not society's. it is the one sole thing that every human can claim beyond doubt that it is 'their's'. i think each person should have full rights to do as their discretion permits with what is solely their's

when you 'save' a person with suicidal leanings and convince the person to live again, the person will by default be grateful and things, but will the thoughts of suicide be fully extinguished or would they just seek temporary refuge in the subliminal?

i feel that i am sane enough to realize the value of my life, my body, and my mind, and that i can make a rational decision as to whether i should live, or die. if another person does not have similar decision making abilities, perhaps the right to suicide should be denied to them. but as far as my own is concerned, i feel i should have the right

you've cited the case of the guy who hung himself on xmas eve, much to the sorrow of his family. perhaps you'd care to consider the hobo with syphilis, the single businessman(or woman) deep in the mires of bankruptcy and corporate fraud who has spent a lifetime building a reputation only to find it negated because of a few big mistakes... you ask about their responsibilities to their families? what if they have none?

don't judge what's right for others. judge what's right for yourself :) if you think suicide 'victims' are selfish, think again. i think it's all a question of standardization. 'shoeboxing' people with different states of mind, and deciding whether the person was capable of thinking for him/herself and capable of rational prioritization

as far as euthanasia is concerned, there has to be a standardization for it that i doubt exists in any country. standards like the maximum degree of pain or suffering that a person may be allowed to reach before euthanasia is an option. perhaps if standards were established, we would'nt have scandals cropping up every year about another kevorkian. personally, i'd pull the plug on my own wife or children if i felt it would relieve them of unnecessary suffering and futility (like vegetative existences). if there was even a glint of hope of recovery, from a scientific point of view, i'd guard that plug with my life

frankly speaking, you should read up on deformities. i'm not chiding you or anything, but a conversation of euthanasia is extremely medically oriented. every line drawn in the philosophical sand has to be backed up with a medical fact. i think a kid with 3 arms and 4 ears is definitely ENabled as opposed to a deaf or dumb or blind kid who is actually lacking an ability and is disabled. please read up on this, because the fact that you say you would'nt mind a kid with 4 ears or 3 arms or whatever getting euthanasia is plain disturbing. if the family would prefer having the extra appendage removed.. heck.. they're seperating conjoined twins at a high rate of success these days lol... i'm sure they can manage an extra arm or leg

in the end, this is all going to boil down to one, cheesy, clichéd and overused question. what is life? in your opinion?

life to me is doing what i want, when and where i want to and how i want to. if i can't decide for myself these four things, and that lack of decision is permanent, i'm not living, and i can't live in the future. i'd like to be humanely killed then
