hi guys,

I am moving to Perth in a couple weeks and don't think Boris would make the trip over safely. He still hasn't eaten anything since December, poor bugger.

Anyhow - if anyone wants to adopt him, it would make my day. He is quite large but docile.

Let me know.

Dan

great site guys - there is a real lack of information on axolotles, other than they are nearly extinct in the wild, they are tasty, and there is a feral population in lake Burly Griffin in Canberra.
Only one book is available(written by yanks) and on your site its a bit outa date (check out those 70's curtains in some of the pictures)The pictures that you have posted are great however your tanks seems to have over head lights: axolotols are very light sensitive which can lead to stress, I dont use them myself...thanxalotl[b][/b
]good luck finding your guy a home

Not sure which pictures you are refering to on the Tank of Death or am I mis-reading your thread here?

We are aware that the axolotls are sensitive to light and they are generally kept off on our tanks, though they do serve very useful at feeding time, as we hand feed our axys the light is great to distinguish between the inhabitants and ensure that they all get a feed and of course when taking photos . We have feed them since we got them with the light on so we know who is getting what and they are really used to it, so used to it, if the light goes on they get up on their hind legs like dogs waiting to get feed, even if you are just checking the temperature gauge Funny little critters they are!

We were visiting one of our favourite pet stores the other day and noticed a sick axy in their tanks and they asked us to bring it home and try and get it better, which we did. The poor little bugger was thinner than my little finger, we put him in the frig for the rest of the day and unfortunately he died this morning. So we understand your concern about him not eating.

Where abouts are you living again? Might have a talk to Buck and see whether we can organise a foster home for your little buddy!

Axolotls in melbourne range from $15-30 dollars, I try and by mine from aquariums(pet shops suck big time)and are usually run by snotty nosed 16 year olds who no nothing about axolotl husbandry. Is anyone doing any breeding? If so I would like to read your adventures

When I read the reference to the 70's curtain, I thought of the image from the book and then tried to remember whether we had scanned it onto the site, so I was a little confused when I couldn't remember doing it. But the curtains are still hideous!

I know what you mean about pet stores, not sure if you read my post about Wet & Dry Pets, but the staff there didn't know that axolotls limbs regenerate *sigh* Its hard to sore isn't it!

I used to work in North Sydney in the old Bayer building and I know where Waverton is. I will have a talk to Buck and get back to you about Boris.

Do you know why Boris isn't eating? Have you tried hand feeding him? Is he floating as well?

no idea why he isn't eating - there hasn't been anything I can pin the blame on that I can think of, he did stop around the time it got really hot though.

i have tried hand feeding - seems to just annoy him though.

he does float around a fair bit too.

Have you tried putting him in a tank with just enough water to cover him? Axys stress a fair bit when their feet don't touch the ground, he may have swallowed too many rocks which could be the reason why he isn't eating and why he is floating...

Buck has some piccies of Herb (I think) when we were having the same problem, couple of nights in a little tank, no more rocks and eating again... Buck where are those pictures?

Hi Rikki,

I have had him for a few years, so at least 4. He (to be honest, have no idea of the sex, never bothered me too much, but I suspect it may be female - is Boris a good name for a chick??) is very docile, and did use to have a housemate that was a catfish surprisingly.

I am moving to perth from north syd, hence the reason I can't take the monster with me . I do need to find little Boris a new home within the next few days or I don't know what I will do.

Get back to me asap.

Cheers

Dan

Our Herb had trouble staying on the ground for about a week so we placed him in standing water only - I think we got extremeley lucky though as this sorted him out overnight.

DEAR DAN,
i'm sorry to hear you are going to give up little boris and that he's not eating.....

I currantly have over 200 axy's all very healthy

as for the problem with eating i have sometimes had this problem but all i do i place them in a small tank (NO Gravel) with enough water to cover them if thy stood straight up, Then i place 5 feeder fish in there with them (mainly guppies they are small and slow moving )and place tank in dark area feed guppy's small dose of fish flakes each day

in a couple of day's u should notice him eating again eg... less guppies then u should try feeding him meal worms to get him going again (use a wooden skewer not ya hand!!)

We were so excited the day we brought them home

Yes! That is an earth worm you can see hanging out of this fella's mouth!

Not sure where you are getting your feeder fish Spawn, but ours aren't small anymore after indulging themselves on our axys food, even biting your fingers to steal the food right out of the mouths of our axys and they are also not slow moving, these little critters are fairing much better than any of the goldfish ever did in the tank of death!

Though I do find it amusing how they pretend they are dead, you poke 'em, they don't move, you poke 'em again and they take off... or am I by myself with the humour in poking 'em?

Shy! you fruitloop!

those feeder fish you put in are Paradise fish

they have a labyrinth organ that can breath atmospheric oxygen and the males will often have fights to the death (or to the fatal infection) so consider separating all the longfinned ones out :) they are the boys.

I havent found mine all that nippy, but they do get mighty fat and about 3-4" long. VERY intelligent fish, unlikely to let themselves get eaten.

they were one of the first fish in captivity and they thrive in cool waters....

*lol*

Sorry, its just kinda cute. they only get tossed into the feeder bin one or 2 times a year, and you managed to land a bag of juvies! Of all the feeders, you managed to get the ones least likely to be eaten :)

Lucky Axies! i would have snatched them up to breed with, but providing they were useful i guess ;)

Were they a Bali Blue buy? i might have to go hunting :)

Oh, and i'm looking for some healthy feeders for my 'kids' too, but most look just plain nasty ATM. Furry meals? Bleh!
Bring on the yummy feeders!

Hi all,
First off -
Spawn: the unidentified fish you have is a Black Widow Tetra.

Now, if you are looking for Axies in Perth I can help you (I live here ;))
When I had mine I got it from Aquarium City. I dont have the address on me but I can find it. If you would like I can probably organise some more info for you on other shops. I also found the quality of Axolotls at Pet City to be pretty good when i went their last. I also know City Farmers normally have them fairly cheap aswell ($20 for a Large Size as opposed to $25 at Pet City) and while I visited one not long ago I got talking and they had just bred some instore and I got shown the fry :)
Ok, Re. Feeder Fish being mentioned I am also a aquarist and the fish commonly sold as feeders are deformed or bad quality fish. Now the key I have found is to become mates with Cichlid Breeders (Cichlids are a family of fish) as often many will have Cross-Bred fish that they will feed off.
I found when I had my Axie it was mildly interest in ghost shrimp but I did have a few problems with it catching them. I suggest if you are seriosuly looking at Axies another alternative to food (Although gross sounding) is to breed some crickets. if you want to get feeder fish the most important thing I learnt is that you want something slow, colourfull and reasonably meaty. I suggest the Cheaper Barbs and a few other species (Barbs arent slow though).

to finish off this almost no format post good luck.

-Sutto
