These have
been available since the development of the science of
fingerprinting at the beginning of the 1900's. Today they are available in a

prolific suppliers of such items as the 'Basic Field Kit' and the 'Complete
Field Kit' is the Faurot Company of New York. In 1904, Deputy Police
Commissioner Joseph A Faurot was the first American to travel to London to study
the new
fingerprinting technique at Scotland Yard, and on his return to the United
States was the first detective to secure a conviction based on
fingerprint identification. |

for the relief of suffering in the living. When a physician is called in by the
police to the scene of a serious offence such as a possible homicide, suicide or
rape they must have another set of paraphernalia. The final contents of the bag
will vary according to the preferences of the individual physician, but as a
general rule an official Police Surgeon will carry with them the follow items
over and above what the they would carry as a general practitioner:
A bag that stands on a flat surface without falling over
Paper, pen and outline diagrams for recording sites of wounds on body
Two thermometers, one at least wide range (0 - 100º C)
Chinagraph pencil for marking class (slides, etc.) and skin
Microscope slides
Disposable rubber/plastic gloves
Forceps: one pair broad ended, one pair rubber tipped
Clean plastic bags: most of which will be used to contain samples, but two must
be large enough to cover the victim's hands to preserve clutched material or
other contact traces; another to cover the head for the same reason
Paper envelopes
Test tubes with rubber corks
Specimen bottles
Pure cotton wool swabs in tubes
Hand magnifying glass
Tape measure
